Abstract:

The African Wiki Women initiative is dedicated to promoting inclusivity and addressing the underrepresentation of African women on Wikimedia platforms, aiming to narrow the gender gap both in content creation and contributor diversity. Our approach revolves around community engagement and strategic partnerships. Our portfolio of projects exemplifies our commitment to this cause. From the impactful SheSaid campaign, which amplifies the voices of African women on WikiQuote, to our compelling presentations at prestigious international events such as the Women's International Film Festival Nigeria and the Shangazi Women Training in Nairobi, Kenya, Inspire Inclusion Campaign we have consistently upheld inclusivity through gender equality and representation in the digital space. Additionally, our engaging social media campaigns and Twitter space call, including the Africa Wiki Women IWD-InspireInclusion Campaign 2024, have sparked conversations and catalyzed action, garnering support and participation from diverse stakeholders from Tanzania, Ghana, and Nigeria, among others. In this lightning talk, we will delve into our initiatives, sharing invaluable insights, lessons learned, and notable achievements. We will reflect on the challenges encountered and the innovative strategies employed to overcome them, all in the pursuit of advancing gender equality and empowerment within the Wikimedia community and beyond.
