Abstract:

The Wikimedia Language Diversity Hub is a proposed extension of the Wikimedia Language Diversity initiative, aiming to support affiliates and volunteers working on new language versions of Wikipedia. These include indigenous, minority, marginalized, and under-resourced language communities within the movement. The Wikimedia movement, despite its linguistic diversity, faces challenges in underserved languages. But despite this vast diversity, similar challenges hinder the growth and progress of underserved languages. To address these challenges, the Language Diversity Hub brings together various voices and perspectives in order to create a strategic direction for knowledge equity. We do this by providing technical and human support for underserved language projects, helping communities find funding, advocating for the needs of underserved language communities, and creating a pathway for the sustainability of new languages in the Wikimedia ecosystem. This session will focus on presenting the Hub’s theory of change and the new strategic plan as follows:

  • The Theory of Change

This outlines our comprehensive strategy to empower new language communities and ensure their success in Wikimedia projects, fostering collaboration and capacity building.

  • The new strategic direction

The new strategic direction will focus on building cohesive support networks, bridging the technical skill divide, and ensuring equitable attention to underserved communities for a more inclusive movement.
