Presenter: Raphael Berchie When it comes to underrepresentation of Africa on Wikipedia, aside themes like content and gender which are lacking, one observable thing lacking is African Languages. Wikipedia the largest online encyclopedia is in over 295 languages, however African language are about just 10% of the languages represented. This figure is very alarming and worrying considering that Africa has an estimation of over 2000 languages. This shows that there is a lot to be done when it comes to cataloguing languages in Africa and Wikipedia surely provides a good opportunity to do this.
This presentation will seek to engage participants on the dire consequences on not promoting their languages. It will also be used to solicit views as to how this can be done collectively learning from others on what they are doing and what can be done to change. This will also be used to shed some light on some ongoing partnerships geared towards promoting local language Wikipedia(s) in Ghana.
