Description :

Wikimedians have over the years organized campaigns around a number of events and these include events such as, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Women in Red, Human Right e.t.c aimed at bridging the various content gap on Wikipedia and other sister projects. These campaigns have in no doubt built the capacity of hundreds of editors as well as helped improve the content gap on the web.

Building campaigns around local occurrences or activities that are meaningful to people can be inspirational and sometimes create the needed edge to utilize locally relevant topics in content creation. Running a campaign to commemorate the heroes or heroines of a country, history of a nation or general celebrations that depict heritage and culture can promote interest from the local populace as these are contents that they have knowledge and interest or naturally care about (comes to them naturally).

Leveraging a local holiday into a campaign is one innovative approach that organizers can champion to address a national or regional cause. This presentation seeks to demonstrate how organizers can adapt this strategy using the Founders Day Ghana Writing Contest as a case study.

In this session, participants and campaign organizers will be able to learn how to leverage local holidays as an integral part of campaign organizing to bridge local content gaps. We will be showcasing a case study using the Founders Day Ghana Writing Contest.

At the end of the presentation, participants will:

  • Learn about the importance of leveraging local holidays to run campaigns
  • Showcase how Founders Day Ghana Writing Contest was employed as a local Holiday to bridge the content Gap
  • Learn from the strategies adopted during the campaign
  • Identify the impact achieved from the Founders Day Campaign
  • Be able to learn how to adapt a similar approach in running their own campaigns in their region
