Description :

This session will focus specifically on heritage in Africa with a particular emphasis on at risk heritage including UNESCO World Heritage Sites and museums. The panellists will introduce you to exciting projects; from mobile apps to new contexts for established campaigns like Wiki Loves Monuments. The panel will outline the successes and challenges in partnering with NGOs, museums and archives to better share African heritage. In addition the panel will examine the potential role of Wikimedia to support the preservation of African heritage, and creating content from African perspectives.

  • WIKIPEDIA FOR MUSEUMS IN UGANDA 2021 - a project to collaborate with museum professionals during the pandemic
  • WIKILOVESMUSEUMS - umbrella of several initiatives to promote museums including African museums
  • MAKUMBUSHO.WIKI - a website mapping museums across Africa, populated from Wikidata
  • MAKUMBUSHO - mobile app of African museums, generated automatically from content across Wikimedia projects
  • MUSEUMWIKIWEEK - 7 day annual global social media campaign
  • WIKIVOICEMUSEUMS (AudioQRPedia) to listen to museums wikipedia articles
  • MEDINASTORIES - a wiki based digital app for North African Heritage
  • WIKI LOVES MONUMENTS ZIMBABWE - new perspectives on a familiar campaign
  • WHINDANGER African World heritage Sites in Danger - Wiki World Heritage UG in collaboration with other African affiliates and NGOs to promote, document and raise awareness about African UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  • TOLD CITIES - project to document unrepresented heritage sites/buildings found in the stone town of Zanzibar, Tanzania - creating new contents on Kiswahili Wikipedia.
