subtitle-180-6390-1"Nonetheless, I do want to share some of the feedback based on the submissions that I did"
subtitle-6390-11580-2"receive and to share some good examples that again may inspire some of you or help those"
subtitle-11580-15510-3"of you who have been struggling to see what I meant."
subtitle-16020-25230-4"So I found myself commenting on the distinction between outcomes, which are the"
subtitle-25230-30630-5"theory of change term for goals, for the desired state, the thing that we want to"
subtitle-30630-38160-6"reach in the future versus interventions, which are actions, things that we do, steps"
subtitle-38160-42540-7"that we take. These are very distinct things even philosophically."
subtitle-42840-45600-8"A goal, a state of affairs, is not an action."
subtitle-46260-48020-9"There are different kinds of things."
subtitle-50550-52740-10"And yet this distinction seems to have been blurred."
subtitle-53130-57390-11"Maybe it's because of these different terms, outcomes instead of goals, interventions"
subtitle-57390-58560-12"instead of actions."
subtitle-59250-60900-13"I tried to make that clear."
subtitle-60960-67140-14"Maybe I failed, but some of the submissions really made a mess and phrased goals as"
subtitle-67830-69690-15"actions or vice versa."
subtitle-71100-76140-16"So I'm calling it out, this confusion, and I'm going to use the good examples I'm"
subtitle-76140-79830-17"sharing to maybe help those of you who were confused last week."
subtitle-80400-86010-18"The other thing I found myself saying more than once is that indicators – those things"
subtitle-86010-93300-19"that we use to measure our progress towards the outcomes – have to be relevant to the"
subtitle-93300-98130-20"outcomes, because again, they are what we use to measure whether we have achieved the"
subtitle-98130-104010-21"outcome. So for example, if our goal is to improve quality of content about dolphins on"
subtitle-104010-110280-22"Wikipedia, and the only indicator that we propose in our theory of change is something"
subtitle-110280-116480-23"like "number of people trained", we are not measuring against our outcome."
subtitle-116480-118740-24"We're only measuring our effort."
subtitle-119540-121730-25"I mean, maybe we trained 500 people."
subtitle-121730-123950-26"Did we actually improve content about dolphins?"
subtitle-124790-125940-27"We don't know!"
subtitle-125940-129050-28"Because this indicator isn't about content about dolphins!"
subtitle-129260-130700-29"It's about people trained."
subtitle-131520-137070-30"You see? Now, we may expect that the fact that we trained people will contribute to"
subtitle-137070-139210-31"content about dolphins, and maybe it will!"
subtitle-139230-140830-32"But how would we know?"
subtitle-140850-146640-33"We need to come up with an indicator that is relevant to our goal of improved content"
subtitle-146640-152740-34"about dolphins. I hope this is clear now, this example of how an indicator can be a"
subtitle-152740-157160-35"perfectly measurable thing and maybe an interesting thing, but if it's not relevant"
subtitle-157160-161270-36"to our outcome, it's not a good indicator against that outcome."
subtitle-161270-166340-37"The indicators are supposed to help us determine whether and how much we have"
subtitle-166340-168140-38"reached our goals."
