Media uploads to Wikimedia Commons[edit]

We invite the Wiki Loves Living Heritage community and the Wikimedia Commons community to discuss best practices for the media upload process.

Consent[edit]

The goal is to ensure that consent is obtained from the people depicted by the picture or the community whose cultural heritage is being shared.

In the upload campaign, the uploader chooses the option that best describes the permission:

  • Consent for sharing this media file has not been obtained.
  • Consent for sharing this media file has been obtained from both individuals depicted in it and the communities whose heritage it represents.
  • All persons or communities were photographed without deception, in a place where they had no reasonable expectation of privacy.
  • This media file was copied from an external source that has recorded evidence of consent, or that adheres to professional editorial standards.
  • This media file does not depict people.

The Information template of the file displays the option that the user has chosen and categorizes the image according to the option.

The process is experimental and the options are in process, and your experience is valuable to craft them further.

How to contribute[edit]

  • You can sign up in the ethical sharing team to develop these practices further. Commons users who have worked with consent, personality rights or traditional knowledge are important for the discussion. The meetings of the group will kick off in near future and the group will convene whenever needed.
  • Comment here on the talk page or directly on the campaign.
