How to attribute openly licensed images[edit]

Images and media on Wikimedia Commons are either public domain (free to use without conditions) or openly licensed by their creator (free to use according to the open license conditions). Creative Commons (CC), is the most commonly used licensing system. All the media shared on Wikimedia platforms has at maximum two conditions:

  • The creator must be attributed
  • If the media element is used as part of another work, the resulting work must have a similar license.

Usual options[edit]

PD, Public Domain – The media is out of copyright in the entire world and can be freely used even without attribution. They can be marked with Creative Commons PDM, Public Domain Mark.

CC0, Creative Commons Zero, CC Zero – The media (or data) has copyright attached to it, but the creator has made it available worldwide as public domain. No attributions are required, but generally it is good practice to always attribute the author whenever applicable.

CC BY, Creative Commons Attribution – The creator has granted permission for anyone to use the media as long as the creator is attributed.

CC BY-SA, Creative Commons Attribution–ShareAlike – In addition to the condition of the CC BY license, the SA license condition demands to use the same or compatible license for an adaptation of the work.

How to attribute[edit]

Place the attribution next to the media, for example in the caption. Attribute the rights holder (creator or organization that the creator has transferred their copyright to) in the form they wish. It is not obligatory to attribute the institution or platform, although it is courteous. State the license with a link to the license text. Check that the conditions and the license version are displayed. Do not use the copyright mark.

For example, the attribution for the image in the header is:

The rejang dance of Tista Karangasem village by Imadedana, CC BY-SA 4.0.
