This is a list of notes on tasks to help improve Wikimedia content around UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Wikidata

• Need to have a well defined/ideal model/schema for a heritage site in Wikidata
• For now:
  • Example: Acropolis of Athens (Q131013) → heritage designation (P1435) → World Heritage Site (Q9259)
  • World Heritage criteria (P2614) → one or more of the ten UNESCO designations
  • World Heritage Site ID (P757) → to official ID
• Constraint violations and reports

Questions

• Why don't Wikidata searches match the official UNESCO count?
  • Official UNESCO count (spreadsheet) - 1121 properties (March 2021)
  • Most of the time it is a "site" vs individual parts - Example graph
  • When modeling a site, use has part(s) (P527) and part of (P361)
  • Need consistent modeling and well-known queries
  • Some are still "tentative" so are these modeled consistently?
  • Check for duplicate IDs
  • Count: 1524 - heritage designation (P1435)→World Heritage Site (Q9259) query
  • Count: 1247 - heritage designation (P1435)→World Heritage Site (Q9259), World Heritage Site ID (P757) exists query
• What do with these extra designations?
  • UNESCO world natural heritage site (Q16617071)
  • World Heritage Site (natural or mixed) (Q63354695)
  • UNESCO world cultural heritage site (Q96212111)
• Do we want instance of (P31) to be World Heritage Site (Q9259)? Probably not, should likely remove these
• Example of problematic site: wooden churches of the Slovak Carpathians (Q471717)
  • It has nine (9) different parts/churches. Are each of them to be designed heritage designation (P1435)→World Heritage Site (Q9259)?
    • If yes, that messes up our count. 7 of 9 are doing so now
    • If no, then it's harder to find them. Need to search using heritage designation (P1435)/has part(s) (P527). One of them is doing that now Church of the Transfer of the Relics of St. Nicholas (Ruská Bystrá) (Q82361)
    • 1 is setting heritage designation (P1435) to part of UNESCO World Heritage Site (Q43113623) - very inconsistent! Example: belfry of the wooden articular church of Hronsek (Q64523081)

• • Query for latitude and longitude of all World Heritage sites query
  • Try bringing CSV into https://kepler.gl/

Tasks

• Remove World Heritage Site (Q9259) from instance of (P31) and add it to heritage designation (P1435): Tabernacle session Cleaned as of April 18, 2021. Moumou82 (talk) 09:14, 18 April 2021 (UTC)

• Check the reconciliation file (link) by country between Wikidata and UNESCO (data exported from UNESCO website) and try to resolve the discrepancies.
