Key activities[edit]

Preparation of meetings materials[edit]

The month of July was dedicated to the foundational work for the project: finalizing partnerships and team building. Below are models of presentations prepared for the different meetings:

Meetings[edit]

Meeting with Target country Date Participants Summary
Kakar Foundation Afghanistan 16.07.2021
  • Erik DeMarche (archeologist, formerly worked in Afghanistan)
  • Khwaga Kakar (Kakar Foundation)
  • Lorenzo Delesgues (Integrity Watch Afghanistan)
  • Nassima Chahboun
This first meeting was held to introduce Wiki World Heritage UG and provide a detailed presentation of Whindanger project to Kakar Foundation, in order to explore the possibility of collaboration.

The presentation addressed the different components of the project, as well as the expected missions of the partner and the deadlines for each activity.

according to Ms Khwaga, Kakar Foundation has the necessary assets to ensure a successful implementation of the project in the country. However, there is a need to introduce some changes in order to cope with the peculiarities of the Afghan context.

As to Mr Erik, he can involve a network of archaeologists and other heritage professionals in the project, especially for donating photographies.

As a result, Kakar foundation officially accepted the collaboration, and asked to program a second meeting to discuss the possible improvements and changes.

Scene for Culture and Heritage Libya 19.09.2021 A first informal meeting was held with Scene organization earlier (in March 2021) in order to inform them about the project and to request collaboration.

In this second meeting, a thorough presentation of the project was provided, as well as detailed timeline and collaboration process (missions, targets and methods).

Scene organization suggested to explore the possibility of providing incentives to the trainers and the participants of the editathon, and it was concluded to have the following: participation certificates and promotion of the 3 best participants on Whindanger website.

The selection criteria of the trainers were also discussed: previous experience in volunteering and monitoring workshops, good communication skills, ability to write articles.

As a result, Scene organization proceeded to launching a call for volunteer trainers right after the meeting.

Tahdeeth for Development Organization Yemen 20.07.2021
  • Ayoub Amer (Journalist and Tahdeeth executive director)
  • Nassima Chahboun
  • Zahra A. (Harmony for Development organization)
A first informal meeting was held with Tahdeeth organization earlier (in March 2021) in order to inform them about the project and to request collaboration.

In this second meeting, a member of Harmony organization was also present, and a thorough presentation of the project was provided, as well as detailed timeline and collaboration process (missions, targets and methods).

Tahdeeth organization brought focus on some challenges that are specific to the Yemen context, especially recurrent internet and electricity issues.

These problems have a strong impact on the ability of volunteers to engage in a long term activity (the training of trainers) and might lead to loosing them throughout time.

In order to mitigate this risk, TAyoub and Zahra suggested to involve a large number of people in the training (around 20), so by the end of training, we can have a reasonable number of trainers even with a retention rate of only 20%.

As a result, Tahdeeth and Harmony organizations proceeded to launching a call for volunteer trainers right after the meeting.

Liwan Organization Iraq 23.07.2021 Although Iraqi sites were not included in 2021 program, we were contacted by Mr Muntadher to request collaboration.

Therefore, this meeting was held to give Liwan organization a full insight on the project, and to explore the possibility of adapting the project implementation to the Iraqi context:

  • Some World Heritage sites are not accessible to public and need special authorization
  • The Iraqi sites were not involved in this year program, therefore we could not cover the eventual costs.

As a result, the collaboration process will be different than the other countries:

  • Liwan organization will launch a call to donate photos, destined only for heritage professionals and activists of its network.
  • The campaign will take place from 21.08.2021 to 30.09.2021
Liwan Organization Iraq 26.07.2021
  • Ayoub Thanoon (Heritage activist in Mossul)
  • Muntadher Al Oda (Liwan member)
  • Nassima Chahboun
This meeting was held to introduce the project to Mr. Ayoub, in order to invite him and the community of heritage enthusiasts in Mossul to donate their photos of the target site nearby (Hatra).
Kakar Foundation Afghanistan 27.07.2021
  • Abdul Haleem (Kakar Foundation)
  • Erik DeMarche (archeologist, formerly worked in Afghanistan)
  • Khwaga Kakar (Kakar Foundation)
  • Nassima Chahboun
This meeting was held to discuss the changes suggested by Kakar Foundation in order to ensure the successful implementation of the project:
  • The site of "Minaret and Archaeological Remains of Jam" has been taken over by Taliban, and is no longer accessible. Therefore, the only solution is to contact professionals that worked on this site to donate their photos.
  • It is mandatory to include the two local languages: Pashto and Dari, eventhough there is no Dari Wikipedia. What can be done is to create a Common page for the photography contest in Dari, and work during the editathon on Farsi Wikipedia instead.
  • Volunteering is not a popular concept in Afghanistan, and providing material rewards is the key to have trainers and participants in the editathon. In order to ensure this, it was decided to provide remuneration for the trainers and cover the eventual costs of transportation and meals for the editathon participants. This will be deduced from the coordination budget.
Whindanger team NA 31.07.2021 The first meeting with the team was held to provide an overview about the foundational work made for implementing the collaboration, and to distribute the tasks.

A list of tasks was prepared for each activity and thoroughly explained to the team members, and each one will assign to themselves the tasks they want to work on.
