The project[edit]

Description[edit]

Describe the project or event.

  • This workshop is to develop open citations and link bibliographic metadata to enhance free knowledge content in Africa and on the web at large.
  • The focus of organizing this event is to encourage continued engagement and activities around open citation programs, especially after the regular 1LIB1REF campaign periods. The project also focuses on providing support, ensuring documentation and sharing of open bibliographic data.
  • The workshop will utilize key platforms such as Wikidata; increasing knowledge around this will encourage participation on Wikidata which can go a long way to bridge the current information gap (African related content) that exists on world renowned biographical platforms such as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. Showcasing the gaps and highlighting the need to contribute will significantly increase and readily make available such data for use.

Motivation[edit]

Why is this project needed? What will it solve or improve?

Capacity building and skills development of members of the community.

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project?

  • A wikicite workshop will be held in March, 2021 for attendees to contribute to the Wikicite local event in Ghana by sharing open citations and bibliographic metadata unto Wikipedia and Wikidata.
  • 30 full days from April 4 to May 4 shall be allowed for the period of the competition. (contributions made at the local event on March 2021 shall be considered as valid entries) Qualified citations for inline referencing and linking metadata contest will have to have a readable prose size 500 Byte of characters.
  • The team will use one week to clean up Wikipedia and Wikidata entries as well as tabulate scores. Winners shall be announced and prizes awarded in the first week of May 2021.

Measures of success[edit]

What are criteria you will define success for your project, and how do you intend to measure for them? What are your targets for these measurements?

  • Number of open citations added: at least 100
  • Number of bibliographic metadata added:100
  • Number of participants: 25
  • Number of workshops: 1 event and 3 office hours
  • Number of African Biographies created or improved
1. English Wikipedia: at least 100 articles
2. Wikidata: at least 50 items

Community[edit]

Who is your target audience for this project, and how will you ? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project?

We would create a Whatsapp group & Twitter page where we can share more resources with the participants and monitor their growth. We will also add non-community members to our community group where they can share their questions and join the conversations we have concerning wikicite. In order to track their contributions, we create a dashboard where they will be made to sign on. We believe that Wikidata and Wikipedia belong in education but very few educators, researchers, writers, wikim(p)edians and students from Ghana are involved as editors on Wikidata and Wikipedia. We want to involve all people in these aforementioned professions to collaborate and contribute to this Wikicite event by sharing Open Citations and linking Bibliographic Metadata on Wikipedia and Wikidata.

The Budget[edit]

How you will use the funds you are requesting? List bullet points for each expense. (You can create a table or link to a separate (public) document if needed.
