Abstract (max 300 words)

Wikidata.org and Commons are the most prominent examples of Wikimedia wikis that are heavily multilingual: The content on them is English by default, but it can be translated to any language. At the same time, these are also sites that heavily rely on using wikitext templates in many namespaces: for mentioning items and properties, for licenses, metadata, infoboxes, navigation boxes, and many other functions. And many of these wikitext templates, in turn, rely on Lua modules. Translating the user interface strings of these modules has always been possible, but completely manual and error-prone. A new feature called "Translatable modules" (or, more technically, "Message bundles") intends to make the localization of modules more robust and convenient for translators, while preserving the flexibility for the module developers. It was first announced at the Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2020, and now it is about to be deployed. This talk will explain the problem, and preview the solution.

How will this session be beneficial for the Turkic communities?

It will show an important new feature that is about to be deployed. It's particularly useful for speakers of languages other than English because it's all about localization. The content is useful for developers of Lua modules and wikitext templates, for translators, and for all Wikidata and Commons editors in general.
