There have been several similar proposals and project ideas. I am here to discuss the idea of a Wikimedia project for a universal family tree. Wikidata cannot support such a project, and Wikipedia is not the place for it; thus, I propose an entirely new project!
This wiki would support connecting humans through familial relationships, as all family trees do. Currently, there is no Wikimedia project that does this for all individuals — only those who are uniquely notable (or related) or have pages on Wikipedia's sister wikis.
The benefits of such a project include opening access to genealogical information to everyone, regardless of ability to afford a subscription to genealogy services such as Ancestry.com. Also like Wikidata, Wikifamily would allow profiles in databases such as FamilySearch, Geni, and WikiTree to all be linked in one central place. Data contained on the wiki would also be of use to historians and scientists — some niche examples including births in a village in a given year, the popularity of a surname over time, and migration patterns. This data could be viewed through a feature similar to the Wikidata Query Service.
Having this project be one of the Wikimedia Foundation is important so that pages can be linked via Wikidata (for those with interwiki links), as well as ensuring the data remains open, free, and accurate.
Page structure
[edit]Each profile, like Wikidata, will be automatically given a unique identifier.
Profile pages will be divided into two sections: that with data, structured like Wikidata Items, and a text section, structured like a Wikipedia article, with a biography of the subject.
Potential WikiProjects
[edit]- For ethnic and social groups (e.g., African Americans, who often have few records before 1870)
- For individuals involved in/affected by historical events (e.g., Holocaust victims and survivors)
- For times and locations (e.g., Arkansas)
- Task forces for cemeteries, schools, orphanages, counties, etc.
Problems
[edit]A policy will need to be made on the inclusion of living people for privacy purposes.
