Wikifilter[edit]

  • Naming suggestions: WikiFilter
  • Domain name: WikiFilter, WikiLink, WikiMLP, WikiMeme, WikiThread, WikiTalk
  • Scope:
  1. Truely wikified version of MetaFilter.com, LinkFilter.net, Slashdot.org, etc.
  2. Software attempt at the true Wikification of comments, dialog, and debate.
  • Details:
Our goal includes the development of a online dialogs, ala blogs, but in a truely wikified format. This project hopes to extend the MediaWiki software in such a way as to allow truely wikified commentary, primarily through the inclusion of "purpose tags".
A purpose tag expresses the purpose of a particular block of text. For example, a piece of commentary intended to be funny could be enclosed between <funny> and </funny> tags. Users would customize their view of the article on the fly by (un)selecting purpose tags; a kind of wiki-threading. One notable goal of the project is the elimination of most talk pages, in favor of a localized <editorial> tag, although this would frequently expand to a whole editorial subpage on a specific topic.
The best form for such an experiment in the wikification of comments, dialog, and debate is a filter site, where people posted links to interesting websites. Such a site requires quite a bit more flexibility than a debate site, but the expected range of comments is still narrow enough that meaningful purpose tags can be established. A priori, the NPOV policy would not apply outside of article heading, but there would be policies of "tag its purpose correctly" and "don't duplicate comments" / "delete duplicates".
Trolling would be permitted only inside of <troll> and </troll> tags. Simple meme tags, written <sm> and </sm>, should encapsulate all "All your wiki are belong to us" type comments. To more closely resemble threading, some purpose tags will have optional arguments, i.e. <debate:religion> and </debate:religion>. The <editorial> tags would also work in this way, although their output would be either placed in the margin, or produce a reference to a subpage.
We would also like to improve MediaWiki's systems for resolving edit collisions.
