How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

I attended WIKIMANIA 2022 virtually from a rented workspace.

What did you spend the scholarship funds on?
  • Personal & family support - $80 (I didn't work throughout the days of Wikimania)
  • Workspace & Data cost- $60
  • Small hardware purchase - $70
  • Local transport - $30
  • Contingency - $10
Takeaways – choose 3 specific Wikimania sessions you attended and describe your key takeaways per session.
  • Educational Partnership.

This session emphasizes the importance of giving every child a chance to have formal education. I so much love this session for its honesty. This session clearly stated the problem with thinking that schools/school management alone are responsible for bringing/convincing parents to let their children go to school. Rather, it is a collective effort that colleges, universities, individuals, communities, and non-governmental organizations need to work together to ensure that every child receives formal education. Wikipedia plays a great role in making useful educational materials/resources accessible to everyone. Students enjoy benefits such as: -Learning the basics of copyright and free license. -A chance to strengthen their critical thinking. -Developing their creative skills, among others.

  • Digital Security Basics

Learned about the importance of digital security. I was able to gather a basic understanding of digital security, the best practices, and the precautions that I need to take to prevent myself online.

  • I am a Wikimedian, not an accountant! Here is how fiscal sponsorship can get your grant going

I learned about fiscal sponsorships. Fiscal sponsorship refers to the practice of non-profit organizations offering their legal and tax-exempt status to groups —typically projects— engaged in activities related to the sponsoring organization's mission. Some organizations using fiscal sponsorship are: Wiki World Heritage User Group, Wikimedians of Arusha UK (Tanzania), Arabic Wikidays, West Bengal User group, and Wiki Loves Women South Asia.

How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022?

Connecting with other Wikimania 2022 participants wasn't easy for me initially, because I had issues with Pheedloop. I couldn't make use of the Networking feature on Day 1 (Although the Core Organising Team fixed this later). For me, I found it easier to connect with others using the Telegram chat and in fact, I was able to connect with the President of Wikimedia Fan Club of my University. I couldn't ask for more! I learned a lot and I was immersed more in understanding the Wikimedia foundation and how to contribute to its projects.

How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?

I celebrated wikimania 2022 by giving myself a nice treat on the final day.
