How did you attend Wikimania (virtually or in-person)?

I joined Wikimania 2022 virtually via the Pheedloop App and YouTube live streams

What did you spend the scholarship funds on?

Thanks to the Wikimania scholarship, I was able to attend the conference. Here is how I spent the fund

  • Food- $115
  • Water and Drinks $25
  • Data cost $82
  • Earphones $15
  • Mouse $13
Takeaways – choose 3 specific Wikimania sessions you attended and describe your key take-aways per session.

A. Digital Security Basics by Konstantin Urbanec

I gained a better insight on how digital tools like VPNs, antivirus, password managers can protect digital security and also the criteria to choosing such tools. These criteria include:

  • Open source
  • End to end encryption
  • Data storage/collection
  • Data leakage and sharing
  • The existing data space

Doxxing & how it affects Wikipedians: Doxxing is when someone exposes information about you publicly available or secret for the purpose of causing harm. Doxxing can cause further harm and the extent of this damage depends on what information was shared and how far it was shared. As a Wikimedian, I realized that I am prone to being doxxed. Wikimedians are targeted for doxing usually after they have reported the truth on something the government wants to hide or when a politician is affected by that truth. I learnt how to compartmentalize, retain anonymity/pseudonymity to prevent doxing. I also gained more knowledge on password protection and protecting oneself from phishing attempts.

B. Wikimedia Sound Logo Production Masterclass by Tas Elias

I learnt about the basic audio terminology and the importance of sound logos

  • Track: A piece of music
  • Keys: The key of a music could be major or minor. The minor key sounds quite melancholic or sad while the major key is happy and bright
  • Tempo: The speed of a track. Measured in bpm. Up tempo is faster in pace while down tempo is slow in pace
  • Instruments: Tools used to create music.

Sound logos are important because they modulate emotions better than graphic logos. People react to sound 17% faster than they react to a visual stimuli. Sound logos also help to tell stories especially when the brand values are correctly translated into sound. I also learnt the process of creating a sound logo- Recording, editing and mixing. This session taught me the basics of using audio editing software like Ableton Live Lite

C. Democracy and Wikimedia- Sharing insights on how our work strengthens civil society by Daria Cybulska

Wikimedia programmes teach participants information literacy. Wikimedia UK has a vision to create a more informed, democratic and equitable society through open knowledge. From research (desk analysis, interviews with participants), it was discovered that Wikimedia projects e.g. edit-a-thons improves information literacy.

What does information literacy involve?

  • Understanding content opinions and fact checking
  • Applying critical thinking skills and identifying bias
  • Using group learning skills and collaboration
  • Taking responsibility for your actions online

Wikimedia strengthens civil society in the following ways:

  • Providing open and free access to accurate information
  • Improving information literacy skills which can help fight disinformation
  • Encouraging volunteering
  • Provision of accessible collaborative infrastructure
How did you connect with other people during Wikimania 2022? How did you celebrate at Wikimania 2022?
  • Joined the “share your pet interactive session”
  • Comment on posts from other attendees
  • Networked by joining groups and saying hello to others
  • Participated in the trivial and game time in hackathons
  • Celebrated by joining newcomer social, asking questions
  • Danced to the music in the Poetry in Motion
