Overall outcomes[edit]

Local Wikimania Conference 2022, Nigeria/Program

It was an exciting event in Lagos where over 50 participants featured in a local Wikimania 2022 is the first edition of the in-person local Wikimania in Nigeria. The edition was jointly organized by leaders of the Yoruba Wikimedians User Group, Igbo Wikimedians User Group and Wikimedia UG Nigeria to display the diversity of the Nigerian people. The event also featured the involvement of IGA Limited, an organization working with the Wikimedia UG Nigeria to document the history and heritage of Lagos through the "Wiki Love Lagos" event. Over 30 members of the community travel to participate in the event. The partner presented a slide on the partnership's progress, what has been achieved, what is yet to be done, challenges facing the projects, and the solution adopted. It also allowed members to network and create a powerful bond. Some of our members presented their works live from the event, e.g. Tochi joined the international platform to deliver on Building International Cooperation: Lessons from Afro-curation. The social event was ideated because participants needed the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the hosting state.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

What worked well?[edit]

  • We maximize the diversity, experience and achievement among the members of the three user groups present at the event.
  • The in-person presented a avenue for another face-to-face discussion among entire members of the Nigerian community
  • Skills sharing during our edithons, hackathons and panel discussions.
  • We were able to invite a partner that gave an insight into ongoing project by the community and help other user group to allig with bthe same project.
  • It allowed members to share experience, challenges and solution about their projects.
  • We've produced a West African Jollof rice video which was played in the main conference event and our in person events.

What did not work so well?[edit]

  • Due to the delay in the grant-making, receiving the applicable fund for the event took a while.
  • We could not access the online platform for the opening due to a technical glitch from the international organizer. However, the situation improved as the event went by.

What we could have done well?[edit]

  • Ensure the proposal is submitted on time so that the review process could have concluded on time.
  • The International team could have used the online platform in the previous event. This approach could have helped with a significant hands-on experience in the form of the end-to-end system running.
