Wikimania 2022/Scholarships/Wikimedia Chile/Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?

Wikimedia Chile (WMCL) organized a Wikimania in-person meeting, it served two purposes. The first was that this event was our comeback to in-person events after two years of the pandemic, so it was a meaningful event for the community that hasn't seen each other in person after a long time. The second was to celebrate our internal and external community, who have been accompanying us throughout this time, plus the event served to integrate new members and new allies of the Wikimedia projects to our community. The grant provided the whole expenses of the event, this means scholarships for people out of Santiago de Chile, the venue and the food, gifts for the attendees and for the speakers, and stationery costs.

This Wikimania in-person meeting provided us with invaluable experience because it was the first in-person event that the WMCL paid-staff organized for the community. It was a challenge to get our community back online after such a long time, but we managed to get high participation and were able to meet with community members again.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets.

Goals Target Achievement Explication
People participating 30 25 We had over 40 people sign up to attend the event. We considered that there are always people who sign up and don't attend, so we thought we would reach 30 people. The problem was that due to the bad weather conditions of the day, several people had problems and could not attend.
Transportation scholarships 6 2 There were people coming from nearby cities who, due to bad weather conditions, decided not to attend.
lighting talks 3 3 We're proud to say that the three lighting talks were from women of the community, which gave more representation.
Discussion panel 1 1 We had the participation of the Director of Momento Constituyente, the Wikimedian in residence who was at the Chilean Constitutional Convention and finally a friend from Wikimedia Chile who works in disinformation
Space to create community 1 2 We had two instances, one at the beginning and one at the end.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The program worked well, and the venue too. The planning of the event worked well too.

  • What did not work so well?

We had some members of our community that couldn't find a babysitter for their kids, and we didn't consider this when we apply for funding. We know now that we need to allocate some funds to this item.
We also didn't consider a dynamic to interact between the participants. We had spaces to get to know each other, but maybe for another time we can plan a specific dynamic for this.

The funds remaining from this grant in the amount of CLP 476,608 (USD 558.74) were deducted from another grant payment for Grants:Programs/Wikimedia Community Fund/Propuesta de financiamiento para Wikimedia Chile 2023.

Anything else[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project?

We had some feedback from the people who attended the event:

  • When asked “On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 7 (excellent), how did you find the meeting?”, people ranked the event between 6 and 7.
  • When asked “Tell us which aspects you consider were the best achieved”, the responses vary from the optimization of the time, the presentations from speakers and the great atmosphere of the event.
  • When asked “Tell us what were the aspects that could have been done better”, most people said that it would have been good to implement more spaces for interaction between the participants.

Some comments from the participants:

  • The presentations were clear and concise, the discussion went smoothly, and the meeting met my expectations.
  • The time of the presentations, the conversation panel, the coffee space to talk, I think it was perfect
  • Many thanks to the excellent team for the fantastic event!
