How will the funding requested support your community’s participation at Wikimania?
Please review following eligible activities and expenses below, and write below any that will be included in your activities.
- Childcare services (or similar family services) to support Wikimania participation
- Data packages to distribute to Wikimania participants
- Administrative or operational costs for to distribute funds to community members, such as transfer fees
- Small hardware expenses to support access (such as webcams, microphones, head/earphones)
- Note: Requests for computers, laptops, tablets, and other personal devices are not eligible.
- Translation services for a Wikimania session
- Video production support for pre-recorded Wikimania sessions (such as equipment or space)
- In-person meetups that coincide with Wikimania activities (food, beverage, meeting space)
- Printed artwork, conference swag/merchandise for event participants
- Childcare services- For diversity, we are planning to have different categories of people and some of them are parents with young children who need care services rendered to their children during the Wikimania conference.
- Data packages to distribute to Wikimania participants- We are planning to support 30 participants with internet data during the Wikimania Festival to purchase the best internet data package which is quite expensive coupled with the 12 per cent taxation directly on internet data in Uganda. Therefore, this would support participants in all the conference days in the comfort of their homes except the final conference day where all participants shall come to one venue to collaborate, connect, celebrate, and make it a festival.
- Administrative or operational costs. We shall have 30 participants that will require facilitation to attend the closing event. There will also be airtime, food, and administrative or coordination of conference costs required to make the event a success.
- Video production We shall hire a professional videographer to take photos and videos during the in person event and upload them on Wikimedia Commons after the event.
- In-person meetup - On the final day of Wikimania (venue, meals, transport), all participating members shall gather at a designated place to collaborate, connect, celebrate, and make Wikimania’s final day a festival.
- Printed material, banner, Wikimania T-shirts shall be printed and given to all the participants on the last day of the event as swag.
If you are planning to distribute funds to community members, such as by running a local scholarship program, please provide additional detail on how you will organize this process.

This description does not need to be comprehensive, but should generally explain the process for how community members will receive funds or support to participate in Wikimania. We shall send out an invite to the community members to apply for scholarship funds by distributing and circulating a “call for applications” to the different user groups on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Telegram) but most importantly the WhatsApp groups (created and coordinated by user group community volunteers to manage and communicate different user group projects, activities and share opportunities with the community).
Regarding the criteria we shall use to determine eligibility for scholarship recipients, we shall consider the following points to sieve applicants;
- Past recipients of Wikimania scholarships in our community who did not complete their post-conference reports will not be considered. be considered. Their applications won't be accepted.
- Applicants who fail to demonstrate significant contributions to Wikimedia projects and activities to merit the award of the scholarship will not be considered.
- Priority will be given to active community members who have never attended any Wikimania conference before but have been active in various activities within the last 12 months.
- Gender balance will be keenly observed to encourage the participation of females.
Funds distribution - We propose to use mobile money transfers to distribute funds if any to the scholarship recipients in the way to distribute the funds to the community, the user group shall use mobile money to transfer funds to the scholarship recipient's mobile money accounts because it is easily accessed by everyone locally. This may be MTN mobile money or Airtel money networks or any mobile money networks prefered by the scholarship beneficiary. In instances where some recipients don't use mobile money, the funds will be transferred to their bank accounts.
On the final day, we shall give out transportation facilitation in form of cash to support the travels of community members to and from the venue.
Outcomes[edit]
Please provide a range or estimate for the number of participants the funding will support.
It is OK if this is estimate is based on limited information, but we want to have an idea of how your activities will support community participation in Wikimania.
Some examples:
- 3-5 participants will receive childcare support to support their participation at Wikimania.
- 10 participants will receive hardware support
- 10-20 participants will receive data packages to support their participation at Wikimania
- 30 people will receive internet data, child care support, swag items, meals and transport at the inperson event.
