Abstract[edit]

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia written collaboratively by Librarians and other web users. It is one of the world’s largest free knowledge base and a strong source for information. However, despite the rich contents and vast availability of information on Wikipedia, many scholars refute the credibility and reliability of Wikipedia contents especially in academic research writing. The misconceptions towards the use of Wikipedia resources in academic research is worrisome. Whereas Wikipedia has been accepted in some parts of the western world, where it is leveraged on, in information literacy instructions and other educational activities, Academia in Africa, Nigeria to be precise seems to be adamant towards this changing trend. Hence, this study explores on the perspective of Nigerian Library and Information Science Educators as academia towards the quality of information in Wikipedia, their perspective on the use of Wikipedia resources in research writing, address the benefits of Wikipedia in carrying out research and identify the challenges associated with the misconceptions towards the use of Wikimedia resources for academic research writings in Nigeria. This is a descriptive survey research design and the population consists of 456 Nigerian Association of Library and Information Science Educators (NALISE) members (NALISE Directory, 2020; https://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/14066917). Sample size of 73 NALISE members was derived using the Krejcie and Morgan “Table for Determining Sample Size for a Finite Population”.  According to  Krejcie and Morgan (1970), for a population of 460, a sample size of 73 is adequate. Therefore, this size is considered representative and generalizable of the entire population. Instrument for data collection would be a web-based survey which will be conducted using google form. Data collected would be analyzed and presented using simple percentages and Tables. Conclusions would be drawn and appropriate recommendations suggested based on the findings of the study to ascertain the misconceptions surrounding Wikipedia resources in academic research writing among Academia in Nigeria from the perspective of Nigerian LIS Educators.
