WikimediaKiosk

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Wikiosk, The "free" kiosk anyone can edit

The page was created on Meta to encourage and solicit suggestions for other content that highlights the wonderful work of Wikipedians everywhere.

Content collected and vetted below will be shown in a loop as a Kiosk for visitors to the Wikimedia Foundation Offices. Of course, you are welcome to use the same URLs however you please.

We will be pulling liberally from Research:Visualization, but will be browser-only content for now.

We will likely not be showing pages that have a probability of showing potentially offensive content. (image feeds) Inappropriate images popping up caused some problems in past attempts at office kiosks.

We will likely throw in some occasional internal-only content. (e.g. Birthday celebrations or Welcome notices for visitors)

This project is a work in progress. Here are some of our planned improvements:

  • More Pages/URLs
  • Automated fetching of URLs
  • Night and Weekend power-down of TV (save energy)
  • Better Browser Restart (needed for memory leaks)
    • Currently hacked up with a browser restart
  • Cleaner page transitions
  • Random URL load without repeat (go through the whole list randomly, then repeat)
  • Variable length URL timers (some things are more interesting to watch than others)
    • Currently hacked with repeated placement of the interesting URL.
