Strategic planning Wikimedia Argentina 2017-2018[edit]

During 2015, Wikimedia Argentina established a strategic plan to define the main lines on which we would work for the following 2 [two] years. Now, having spent 2016 consolidating our programs and defining the strategic lines on which to base our actions, we have redefined our annual plan for the years 2017-2018. The following strategic plan has been approved by Wikimedia Argentina’s Annual Assembly, on September 24th 2016.
This plan is meant to be the starting point on which to develop the specific actions to work with our community during the 2016-2018 period.

Context: Situation of Wikimedia Argentina both internally and externally[edit]

With the aim of determining the starting point on which to define the different strategic orientations, the main body of the 2016-2018 Annual Plan, it is necessary to analyze the current situation of Wikimedia Argentina, identifying its main strong and weak points.
Methodologically, the strategic lines on which Wikimedia Argentina’s actions are developed are based on the following pillars:
1. Encouraging the participation of the community: Creating opportunities for the participation of the beneficiaries of the Wikimedia projects, from the design to the evaluation of the activities.
2. Designing more diverse projects: Including a crosscutting gender and diversity perspective in each of the projects derived from the different strategic lines.
3. Improving content and knowledge on the Wikimedia projects: Promoting activities and actions that improve the content of the Wikimedia project both quantitative and qualitatively.
4. Consolidating alliances at a local, regional and international level

According to these premises, the context of Wikimedia Argentina can be determined through the following DAFO:

Oportunities Threats
  • The situation of the country is advantageous for the incorporation of new technologies in educational environments of all levels.
  • We have well-established relationships with the national and local governments.
  • New spaces are being created constantly for the reflection on new technologies and education.
  • Wikimedia Argentina and its projects are well received by current and future “stakeholders”.
  • Wikimedia Argentina has the capacity to strengthen the relationship with volunteers.

  • Economic instability in the country makes it difficult to develop national projects.
  • 2015 general elections, with changes in public policies.
  • Some academic and official environments still have reservations regarding the legitimacy of the content in Wikipedia.

Strenghts Weaknesses
  • A team committed with Wikimedia Argentina’s vision and mission.
  • Excellent relations between the staff and the Board of Directors.
  • A well-defined identity. Programs that respond to Wikimedia’s vision and mission.
  • Good relationship between Wikimedia Argentina and the community of Argentinian volunteers in Wikimedia projects.
  • Constant contact and cooperation with other Latin American chapters and members of the Iberocoop network.
  • Management model based on Wikimedia Argentina’s commitment with the Wikimedia projects.
  • Ability to make our projects grow to a national level.
  • Good reception of the Wikimedia projects among our “stakeholders”.
  • Increasing positioning of Wikimedia Argentina in the media.

  • Small staff
  • Adaptability of new staff for the completion of our actions.
  • Editors don’t have much knowledge about the projects, about Wikimedia or the way we work.
  • Difficulties to complete activities of all our programs, moving away from one-time and isolated activities.

Wikimedia Argentina Programs 2017-2018[edit]

After the 2016 evaluation and analysis, Wikimedia Argentina has reached the conclusion that it is best to be able to adapt the strategic lines on which we base our three programs according to our objectives.

During the period 2017-2018, Wikimedia Argentina will articulate its programs through the following strategic lines of action:
1. Participation content (of quality): Fostering opportunities of participation and improving the content of the Wikimedia projects are still priorities of WMAR and the movement. The novelty is to figure out the way we will approach this during 2017.
2. Promotion of Free Culture: Through our proposals, we get closer to new specialized collectives, where we can not only raise awareness but also incorporate new volunteers, counterparts and members to our WMAR community.
3. Getting the movement involved and making it better (movement improvement and involvement): This is a new strategic line. In Wikimedia Argentina we believe that our main counterparts are the movement’s own organizations. One of our objectives for 2017 is to learn and to consolidate knowledge.
4. Promoting diversity by dealing with specific themes (thematic approaches): Gender, Human Rights and the construction of Argentinian memory have been our crosscutting lines until 2016. In 2017 we’ll promote these themes as strategic lines through which we can improve content of the Wikimedia projects qualitatively.
