Abstract:
This paper proposes that Wikipedia should be used in a wider effort, located at universities, to engage students and society with the region’s history. More accessible than traditional forms of scholarship, Wikipedia can offer the opportunity to capture – and commemorate – aspects of the past that receive little attention. Based on an analysis of wide gaps in how the region’s history is covered this talk develops the concept of Wikipedia as a site for microcontributions to scholarship and commemoration. This idea connects to debates that have described Wikipedia as a “unique space[…] for the construction of knowledge, memory and culture.” |
