Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda/Wiki For Refugees 2023
The #WikiForRefugees 2023 Editathon is aimed at gathering diverse urban refugees and stakeholders from Kampala and peri-urban areas in Uganda to co-create and collectively improve information about refugee livelihoods and refugee settlements on Wikipedia, the world’s largest collaborative knowledge base. This program will be divided into three parts as follows:
- Intensive training: Introducing the participants to key skills and tools on how to update/ edit and add articles to Wikipedia for participants of the event.
- Edit-a-thon - Dedicating the second day of the program to improving stub articles and creating new entries about critical topics, underrepresented groups, initiatives, and putting up-to-date figures about refugees, etc.
- Creating content for upload on Wikimedia Commons including videos, audio, and videos to document the life of refugees in Uganda.

Wikimedia Uganda and Wikimedia Botswana held a session at the Digital Rights and Inclusion Forum 2023 held in Nairobi, Kenya and we discussed and explained how we are closing the digital divide through projects like Art+Feminism and Wiki for Refugees.

What Does Digital Inclusion Look Like on Wikipedia?
Gender inequality is rife across Africa and beyond, especially online, where there is a shortage of fact-based news, information, and knowledge about women and their experiences on Wikipedia. Refugees’ and women’s knowledge and contributions to the world are invisible online due to the continuous digital divide that exists across the continent. This session intends to narrate practical stories of what is being done by East African Wikimedians through Art+Feminism in Botswana and Wikipedia For Refugees in Uganda to advance digital inclusion on Wikipedia and build a sustainable, open, free, safe, and secure environment/space for all. This panel discussion will help the audience understand the work of East African Wikimedians in closing the digital divide on Wikipedia to amplify work in other countries. The session will be captured in the form of a blog post and published on Diff to share future learnings with Wikimedians across the world.

This year's #WikiForRefugees is in collaborations with RELON (Refugee Led Organization Network). RELON is a refugee-led non-profit NGO based in Uganda which was founded in May 2016 with the primary objective of strengthening the capacity of refugees to engage and respond to the challenges faced by refugees and refugee-led organizations. RELON aims to be an independent and credible voice that influences actions towards refugee inclusion and participation in decision-making processes in Uganda and beyond.

Responsibilities[edit]
Wikimedia Community User Group Uganda will be responsible for overseeing and executing the training sessions while also offering essential support to all the participants involved. The usergroup will play a pivotal role in ensuring the success and effectiveness of the training program plus ensuring that all logistics and facilities required for the training sessions are in place.
RELON on the other hand, will take charge of providing the necessary training space including arranging suitable venues . Additionally, RELON will play the role of coordinating with the participants, ensuring they have the information and resources needed to participate in the training sessions smoothly.
Platform Africa will handle the communications during the event such as videography, photography and etc.
