- Summary of the session
After having presented himself, Greyham (Honorary Treasurer of WMUK) initiated the session with exercises asking all present participants to identify their organisation in terms of governance, funding, charity status and decision making processes. Among other aspects, sevens organisations identified themselves as a Not-For-Profit (NFP), four organisations as a charity.
After having done these two exercises, Greyham started to talk about Wikimedia UK’s history from 2009 to 2015. Main points of the history were (see the presentation slides) WMUK’s fundraising experiences, the “conflict of interest” incident which led to a restructuring of WMUK and, finally, WMUK’s overspending experience in 2014/15 and a further restructuring phase since then.
Greyham continued what WMUK learnt out of its history, especially in the financial management part. He presented a list of Factors for an effective financial control of a charity/non-profit. A further check-list of financial management controls completed his explanation.
The session was concluded with a final group exercise on in which area affiliates are working on and how financial management tools could help them in their work and solve eventual problems.
