Overview of Wikimedia LGBT+

[edit]

Wikipedia is the world's most requested, published, accessed, and consulted source of information on LGBT+ topics, and Wikimedia LGBT+ is the organisation which supports both editors and readers of this content. The mission of Wikimedia LGBT+ is to promote the creation and expansion of queer content across all Wikimedia projects, to support queer editors and people who edit in queer content areas, to hold space for queer interests in Movement-wide policy discussions, and to promote Wikimedia projects and Open Knowledge in queer spaces.

In 2024, the Wikimedia Foundation awarded core funding to the organisation. In April 2025, Wikimedia LGBT+ used this grant to hire its first Executive director and a Director of programmes and community engagement. Our 2025–26 core funding grant includes an additional staff position, for which we are currently hiring.

As of December 2025, Wikimedia LGBT+ is seeking applicants for this position. Apply by emailing a CV and cover letter in English to hiring@wmlgbt.org before Friday 13 February 2026 at 23:59 Anywhere on Earth. Including samples of training materials, e-learning modules, or facilitation portfolios would also be helpful. Send any questions to the same address.

Learning & development officer

[edit]

Wikimedia LGBT+ seeks applicants for learning and development officer. The position is fully remote, to start immediately, reporting to the Executive director.

The Learning & development officer will lead the creation, coordination, and delivery of training programs that strengthen the capacity of Wikimedia LGBT+ contributors, partners, volunteers, and community members. This role is ideal for someone passionate about open knowledge, digital learning, community empowerment, and inclusive educational design.

As a part-time and fully remote position, the role offers flexibility, creativity, and the opportunity to shape innovative learning experiences within a global movement. The role may involve occasional travel for conferences, gatherings, or training workshops, depending on funding and availability.

Key responsibilities

[edit]

1. Training design & development

[edit]
  • Develop interactive training modules, workshops, and toolkits tailored to Wikimedia LGBT+ strategic goals.
  • Create engaging e-learning content, including slide decks, facilitator guides, handouts, assessments, and multimedia components.
  • Design onboarding programs for new volunteers, contributors, and partners.
  • Ensure all training materials are accessible, inclusive, and culturally responsive.

2. Facilitation & delivery

[edit]
  • Deliver virtual training sessions, webinars, and skill-building workshops for global audiences.
  • Support peer-learning initiatives, such as learning circles, mentoring schemes, and skill exchanges.
  • Coordinate translation/adaptation of training materials for diverse communities.

3. Learning strategy & evaluation

[edit]
  • Develop a learning and development strategy aligned with organisational objectives.
  • Conduct training needs assessments (TNAs) and community consultations to identify skill gaps.
  • Track training data, compile reports, and leverage insights to improve future training programs.
  • Maintain an updated repository of learning resources and documentation.

4. Collaboration & community engagement

[edit]
  • Work closely with the Executive director, project leads, and community coordinators to align training activities with ongoing projects.
  • Support capacity-building for Wikimedia LGBT+ affiliates, partners, and volunteers.
  • Build relationships with Wikimedia Foundation learning teams and other movement collaborators.

Essential skills & qualifications

[edit]
  • Fluency in English — any additional languages would also be advantageous, especially Spanish
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and problem-solve within a team environment, including volunteer communities
  • Demonstrated fluency in online collaboration tools (e.g., wikis, shared text documents, and similar)
  • Facility in social and networking situations. Ability to interact with a wide spectrum of personalities that Wikipedia brings, as well as external partners.
  • Familiarity with multilingual online communities, whether in the Wikimedia platform, in social media, or elsewhere in user generated content platforms
  • Familiarity with major social and ethical issues in queer communities
  • Proven experience in learning & development, instructional design, or training coordination (NGO, community, or open-knowledge sectors are a plus).
  • Strong ability to design and deliver interactive, learner-centred training modules.
  • Experience developing digital learning content (for example: Articulate, Moodle, Google Workspace, Slides, MediaWiki, or other instructional tools). WikiLearn uses Open EdX, so experience here would be especially helpful
  • Excellent facilitation and communication skills across diverse global audiences.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility principles, inclusive pedagogy, and community-based learning.
  • Commitment to Wikimedia values, LGBTQ+ advocacy, and open knowledge.
