Training of Trainers Post-Conference to Wikimedia Summit[edit]

We are happy to announce that we will be hosting a Training of Trainers Post-Conference fringe event after the Wikimedia Summit

The Community Development and Learning and Evaluation teams at the Wikimedia Foundation will organize a post-conference training for movement organizers who are interested in leading their own events within the Wikimedia movement. During these two days, sessions will follow a training-of-trainer model, teaching attendees how to lead similar events back in their home communities. Topics will include:

  • A leadership style inventory
  • What does it mean to be a trainer?
  • Adult Learning models and planning for adult learning
  • Communication skills needed for training and events (e.g. facilitation, active listening, public speaking, giving feedback)

Registration & Selection[edit]

Registration for Wikimedia Summit 2019 opened on Friday, November 2. In the registration form, you were asked to indicate your general interest in the post-conference Training of Trainers. Only a limited number of slots are available. The selection process is based on the criteria described in the section below. The selection process will end when all the slots are full; participants are selected on a first come, first served basis, so the sooner you register, the better chances you have of participating in the training. Qualification of all criteria does not guarantee participation. Should demand be less than expected, restrictions may be loosened. Follow-up communications and notifications will be sent beginning November 9th. If you have any questions, please reach out via the talk page.

Selection Criteria:[edit]

The selection criteria for the Training of Trainers include that all participants must be endorsed to participate by their affiliate group and demonstrate evidence of at least 4 of the following to qualify for participation in the Training of Trainers event:

  • You want to teach back home what you learn.
  • You have helped others to learn or implement one or more programmatic activities in the last 12 months or you plan to in the next 12 months.
  • You have engaged, or plan to engage, in learning and evaluation practices in order to learn about your communities impact.
  • You are interested in teaching about community programs and/or engagement activities at regional events.
  • You have taught or presented in a Learning Day event in the past.
  • You have demonstrated application of something you learned at a past Learning Day event
  • You are working to develop and/or lead skills training workshops for leadership development in your home community (e.g., skills development for community engagement, community health, program design and evaluation).

Looking forward to two days of Learning Together!

Preparation[edit]

There will be 3 co-facilitators for this event from the Wikimedia Foundation, Simona Ramkisson, Dana McCurdy, and Maria Cruz. We will facilitate the entire agenda from 9-17 on both days. Participants do not need to prepare modules, lightning talks, or posters ahead of time.

In lieu of the typical preparation requirements at previous Learning Day events, we ask participants of the Training of Trainers to think about which events they want to lead in their local communities. You will have time to come up with a plan at the post-conference event, however, if you want to think ahead of time, here are some key questions:

  • What kind of event do you want to plan?
  • What are the goals of your event?
  • Who will be attending your event?
  • What topics might be on your event agenda?

April 1-2: Post-conference Training of Trainers

Outcomes[edit]

Please check out the results of our post-event evaluation on our evaluation report page!

Of note, we found that 71% of participants reported increased confidence in their mastery of every one of the training's core skills. Almost all (94%) participants intend to lead a training in the near future, and the majority (82%) intend to lead a similar training-of-trainers.

We will follow-up with these participant again, six months after completion to see what they are up to and how they are using the skills they gained.
