Community and Participation[edit]

Women TechStorm[edit]

From 10-12 May the Women Tech Storm was hosted by the Royal Library in The Hague. Five workshops were offered: Commons tools / GWT, Wikidata 101, Wikidata & SPARQL and Mediawiki. In the meantime there was time for collaborating on projects and one could take part in presentations by the collection specialists of the KB about the masterpieces of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek.

We are impressed by the enthusiasm of the participants; how they took their first steps within the Wikimedia projects. Participants automatically found each other and started collaborations or were inspired to start up new projects themselves. A small sample of the results presented at the closing session: A broken Wikidata script is working again, new queries have been created on Wikidata, editor 1Veertje has gained reinforcement in her Video-Cat-Bot project, the Sparql knowledge of a large group of participants is enlarged and a nice extra: 1 Wikipedia article was written on the Polish Wikipedia.

The first results of the evaluation among the participants have come in. Many respondents intend to continue with their acquired WikiData knowledge. What is most appreciated is the open atmosphere among the participants, the large gender diversity and the social character of this Women TechStorm.

Amnesty International Wiki-a-thon #BraveEdit[edit]

On May 19 Amnesty International held on edit-a-thon, which was initiated by an international event that was launched by WMUK and Amnesty. We have offered our support to the local Amnesty chapter and we are very thankfull for the effort of our volunteers. They have guided the participants that were mainly new Wikipedia editors. Thanks to their help an impressive number of Wikipedia articles have been created.

Content donation Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen[edit]

Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen (Dutch Network War Collections) is a cooperative effort of Dutch scholarly and heritage organizations related to WWII. The goal of the Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen) is to guide end users through the physically scattered sources on this topic. One way to achieve this is to upload the collections curated by Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen to Wikimedia Commons. Over the past months, Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen has uploaded (or participated in the upload of) 3 collections:

  • The Menno Huizinga Collection at (NIOD Instituut voor Oorlogs-, Holocaust- en Genocidestudies is the most extensive freely-accessible collection in the WWII Open Data Depot. The copyright on these remarkable wartime images lapsed on 1 January, 2018, releasing these pictures into the public domain. During WWII, Menno Huizinga photographed life in The Hague, culminating in the Liberation. In total, 779 of Huizinga’s photos of life in the Hague from NIOD’s collection have been added to Wikimedia Commons and can be accessed here.
  • A large portion of the NSB Photo Service images in the collection at the NIOD Instituut voor Oorlogs-, Holocaust- en Genocidestudies has been put into the public domain by NIOD itself. These are photos for which no specific photographer could be traced, and photos by three individuals: Otto, Cino and Swart. These photos were clearly created as propaganda material. That said, they do provide a glimpse into daily life during the Second World War, albeit through the eyes of National-Socialist photographers. A number of prevailing themes can be seen in the collection, such as the propaganda offensive The Fight for Amsterdam, the SS-Schüle Avegoor, and the National Youth Storm. A selection of nearly 600 photos has been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and can be accessed here.
  • The Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid has, in cooperation with Netwerk Oorlogsbronnen, entered the 171 films of the NSB Film Service into the public domain. These films were first published around 70 years ago and comprise “confiscated war material”, the copyright for which fell into the hands of the state in 1944 when the NSB was disbanded under the Besluit ontbinding landverraderlijke organisaties (Decision to Dismantle Traitorous Organizations). In this way the films found their way to the RVD (Public Relations Department) film archive and later the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid. The films cover primarily the period 1941-1944 and depict the NSB’s idealized image of discipline, order, and national loyalty. Some of the material has been scanned at the highest possible quality. The entire collection can be accessed here.

Month of Resistance / Maand van Verzet[edit]

2018 is the year of Resistance / Jaar van Verzet, in which attention is called to the Dutch resistance during WW2. As part of this event, WMNL organised a writing week, called the Month of Resistance, on Dutch Wikipedia. This was co-sponsored by a grant from the Vfonds. This writing week ran from 1 May to 7 June and some small prizes were set apart for outstanding contributions. These prizes have not yet been awarded, but overall statistics are available: 16 different users (of which 2 newly registered accounts) createdor expanded 116 different articles, ranging from nl:Ans van Dijk to nl:Delftse studentenstaking and nl:Edelweiss Piraten.
