Wikimedians of Bulgaria/2016/Wikiquiz Report

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

In the beginning of 2016 four Wikimedians started a Wikiquiz.

The Wikiquiz was a weekly quiz on Facebook, during which a question would be posted on Facebook every day and the participants would be asked to fill out a Google Form with their answer every day and leave some means of communication – user name, mobile phone number or email. The winner for the week would be the participant with the highest number of correct answer during the week. The Wikiquiz was organised for four weeks between 13 January and 9 February 2016.

Most of the answers of the quiz-questions would be found in articles on Bulgarian Wikipedia, but there were also questions which could be answered only by research outside of Bulgarian Wikipedia.

The aim of the Wikiquiz was to bring readers to Wikipedia and motivate them to contribute when they found the answer they were looking for. The prizes was a voucher for a bookstore in value of up to 30 BGN (15.34 EUR, ca 16 USD). The prizes were granted with private funds of the Wikimedians.

The aim was not reached. Only a few participants registered as Wikipedia editors and as far as we know only one article was created during the quiz (though this one was a very notable one – Jesse Owens, the four-time Olympic champion from Berlin 1936). Though one unexpected aim was reached and the number of likes on Facebook increased rapidly and some of the participants spread the word about Wikipedia among their friends and thus the Wikimedians activities of our community reached hundreds more people later in the year.
