Wikipedia Training for Law Librarians and other Library professionals in Lagos State

    Description[edit]

Law librarians in Lagos state have little or no knowledge about Wikipedia and its sister projects. We had a WikiGlam awareness for librarians in June,2022 (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/WikiGlam_Awareness_for_Librarians_in_Lagos_State) and the success of the project had a ripple effect which today the Law librarians and the other librarians that heard about the first training are calling for their own training. They are curious about what Wikipedia is, and why they have been told not to use it as a reference source in special and academic libraries. . In addition, there is inadequate data about the law Libraries and law librarians in Nigeria on Wikidata. Queries on Wikidata: https://query.wikidata.org/querybuilder/?uselang=en and https://query.wikidata.org/querybuilder/?uselang=en showed only one(1) law librarian and library. There are libraries located in law firms, in courts, and at the faculties of law in higher institutions. Also, Law librarians work with renowned lawyers and judges, and this training will enable them to write articles about notable lawyers, law firms, and judges. Moreover, we also have books written by renowned lawyers without information about the books on Wikidata. The training will provide data for Wikidata about Nigerian law books, which can make it easier for people who need this information to find it.

    Program Goals[edit]

The goal of this project is to help write, and improve:

    • articles on renowned lawyers, Judges, and law firms and associations in Nigeria.
    • law books authored by Nigerians on Wikidata.
    • existing articles on law firms and their areas of specialization in Nigeria
    • articles on Nigerian Judicial systems
    • articles about different types of law libraries (Law firms, Supreme courts, Court of appeal, law schools, and faculty) in Nigeria on Wikipedia and Wikidata

    More so, the project will:

    • Enable Law Librarians and other library professionals to become content creators on Wikipedia.
    • The Law librarians we want to train can teach and help their users know about using Wikipedia as a starting point for their research work and references
