Writing and editing articles

The first day! After finishing up the last preparations, Jana and I picked up (most of) the participants at the subway station and welcomed them with ice cream, fruits and cold water in our accommodation. Our accommodation is a bit below ground, so it was much cooler there than the 35°C it had outside. After everybody arrived, we settled down and had dinner, we played some introductory getting-to-know-each-other activities and I made an introduction into the background of the program and the program of the next two weeks. Three participants we expected unfortunately didn't show up at our meeting point. --Shikeishu (talk) 09:51, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Saturday, August 15[edit]

After getting some rest from our travel, we spent the day at a lovely SCI Österreich office in Vienna, where we will be working for the next two weeks. Despite the incredibly hot morning, people from Wikimedia Austria prepared an interesting presentation for us on Wikipedia in general and taught us the basics of writing and editing articles. In the afternoon we did some brainstorming on topics related to peace. We took a look at the materials our coordinators brought from the library and did some research on our own. We tried adding some minor changes (which was terrifying enough!:) and presented to the others the issues we are interested in writing. In the next few days there will hopefully be some new or edited articles related to migration in Austria and Ireland, Irish history and racism, gender stereotypes and feminism, prejudice and discrimination from the psychological viewpoint as well as updates on current conflicts and missing articles on peace in general. At the end of the day we were quite sweaty and tired but most importantly, inspired! :) -- Xendzi (talk) 10:20, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sunday, August 16[edit]

11:30

The weather gets cooler, so we are all waiting for the air to float inside the room. We have just heard a presentation about armed conflicts and the support of them by Western countries, which makes me feel quite small. I hope, that during our work on different articles, we can still keep up the motivation to do our part in forming a more empathic, peaceful society. And even if it is just some weirdos, who will stumble across our articles during the next years. And even if it is just small phrases and improvements, that will make people think in more diverse perspectives.

The wifi is working well, which helps researching a lot. There are things, I always wanted to know, but never took the time to read about them properly. After getting to know Wikimedia and Wikipedia more during yesterday and today, I think we can start creating a really good output. It seems that our group is very independent, and there are much more ideas to write about than I expected. --Janafo (talk) 11:30, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Monday, August 17[edit]

Today was much cooler which helped us to work and to think. We had no speakers in the morning so we all got straight into our individual projects and worked away until lunchtime. During our lunch hour we had a lovely visit to the University and its library and we enjoyed the cooler air. In the afternoon we continued with our individual work although there was quite a lot of requesting and receiving help from each other as we´re not experts in Wikipedia yet! After five o´clock Jean Frederic and Claudia arrived and Jean delivered a very entertaining and informative talk about Wikidata. Jean was incredibly enthusiastic about the topic and information about Geneawiki, The Wikidata Game, ´Ask me Anything´ and translating menus was particularly interesting.

Tuesday, August 18[edit]

On Tuesday morning we began our working day with a group meeting where we shared how our work is progressing and we made plans for the day. We worked on our individual projects in the morning and we left a little early as we were looking forward to participating in our WikiTuesday in the evening. Thomas brought us to a typical Viennese café which was lovely. In the evening Susi arrived to prepare Marillenknödel and Zwetschhenknödel for us which we really appreciated as it involved a lot of work. Susi was ably assisted by Andrea, Claudia, Heinz, Manuel and Raimund. We thoroughly enjoyed both the delicious food and the conversation. We learned a lot about Wikipedia, Vienna over dinner. Thanks to everyone involved. Looking forward to the next WikiTuesday!

Wiki for Peace 2015

Today we had the first free day since the project has started to explor Vienna's multiple points of interest. In separate smaller groups we got to walk through the gardens of Schloss Schönbrunn, observe the animals in the oldest zoo, learn more about psychoanalysis in Sigmund Freud museum and admire the artwork at Albertina gallerie and Kunsthistorisches Museum. We finished the day with Elvis Presley performance screening at Vienna Filmfestival. Overall we had a great time even though it was the coldest day in Vienna for us so far. Looking forward to get back to our research tomorrow. --Nastyatyshko (talk) 12:43, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thursday, August 20[edit]

On Thursday we woke up around 8:00 am and we all had breakfast together. Afterwards we took the undergound so as to get to the office where Thomas' cousin and a friend of her were waiting for us. Once in the office each one started to work on searching and editing articles and Thomas' showed the two girls how Wikipedia actually works and how to edit Wikipedia articles. We then had lunch together in a cosy environment and shared feelings and ideas on our work topics. As usual we kept on working after lunch until 5:00 pm. After that we went back to the scouts centre in order to prepare the dinner and have dinner.

Friday, August 21[edit]

Today we had a rocky start, as some participants were not feeling well. After a late breakfast we arrived at the office to continue writing our articles. In the afternoon, some visited the museums in Vienna, as well as the cat coffee and finished the day at the music festival at the Rathaus. All in all, it was a relaxing day.

Taking photos for Wikimedia, Wikipedia for Peace 2015

On this beautiful Saturday we explored Vienna from a very local perspective: We divided into three groups and went out into different parts of the city in order to take pictures of natural monuments and public art objects that were not yet photographed by other people for Commons. We achieved a lot and found a lot of beautiful motives: sitting boys, dog statues and a lot of trees inside the yards or private gardens of fancy buildings. We got in touch with a lot of people living close to the monuments as well, usually they told us about their trees or they even gave hazelnuts to us as a present. In general, people were quite surprised that an international group of Wikipedia activists would want to take pictures of a tree in their garden. In the afternoon Heinz gave us an introduction into Wikimedia Commons. We managed to upload our pictures and illustrate several articles with them. --Shikeishu (talk) 08:37, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Our Wiktionary Workshop

Today we had a very interesting workshop with Alexander Gamauf about Wiktionary. After his presentation we all worked on translating terms relating to peace from the various language Wikis. Alexander helped us with this task. --Rooneysbirr (talk) 10:56, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Free day - exploring Bratislava!

Monday was our last free day before leaving Vienna, so we decided to go on a short trip to Bratislava, Slovakia. It was sunny and the wind was perfect for sightseeing. We managed to explore the whole city and it’s main sites in just few hours and have a lovely lunch as well eating traditional Slovak food. Now we are very excited for our last two days and we have a lot of preparing to do for International Evening and Open Day in our office :) --Xendzi (talk) 10:19, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tuesday, August 25[edit]

Tuesday was very exciting. We spent the morning writing articles as usual, and afterwards we went back to Scouts centre to prepare for International dinner. First guests that arrived from Wikimedia Austria and SCI Austria had a chance to try a bit of Slovak palneka made out of apricots, as well as famous Slovak brindza cheese and Serbian ajvar. Next were served some delicious Ukrainian bliny, Bulgarian pumpkin pie as well as Irish vegetarian shepherd’s pie. Tomas made amazing sushi as a second course and there were also a lot of sweets and chocolates from different countries. We finished the meal with traditional Irish coffee (yes, with a bit of whisky inside) and a glass of Bailey’s. During the dinner we also had a chance to listen to some Irish rock music. We made short presentations of our work on Wikipedia so far and some of us were interviewed for a short video about the project that’s coming up soon! --Xendzi (talk) 13:57, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wednesday, August 26[edit]

We began our last real day with an open office at the SCI office, to which we invited people through all the channels we could. Several people came and we could introduce them to writing Wikipedia articles and to our project. We finished up our last work on our articles and concluded with a good feeling that we did a great job in the last two weeks. We cleaned the scouts centre and spent a nice evening on top of the stairs above the Hauptbücherei close to our accomodation talking and relaxing. --Shikeishu (talk) 20:04, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thursday, August 27[edit]

Basically this day was saying goodbye. It was strange to leave the Scouts centre after these two intense weeks and to leave Vienna at the same time. I hope we'll meet again some day, everybody! :) --Shikeishu (talk) 20:04, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
