Wikisource Community User Group/Indic Wikisource Survey about Challenges and Achievements (2019)

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Which barriers/problems do you feel are the most challenging for the progress in your language Wikisource ?

[edit]

Communities Responses -

Telugu - The environment in our part of the country, where Telugu youngsters are not conversant with their own mother- tongue. This neglect is the result of the successive Governments in power.

Bengali -Bengali wikisource is doing very well now-a-days. I think categorization is the most challenging part.

Odia- 1.Not aware of list of templates and tools available for wikisource

2. In Odia, the main problem is lack of knowledge and the number of active editors apart from OCR. We never conducted any workshop on Wikisource, so I never realized the technical things. This time when we attended Pune, I came to know about lots of things and realized that we had proofreaden lots of books, but never transfer those to proper format to read like a book. Still we don't have the book view style.

Hindi- PD licences

Punjabi- We have books uploaded on Punjabi Wikisource but we dont have active contributors to do proofreading and we have only few people who know the further processes(i.e. Validation, Transclusion). Nearly everyone those edit on our Wikisource know basics of editing. Or just correct ocr mistakes.

Which practices is best of your Wikisource (learnings for other communities) and what your community did best on Wikisource in the last 6 months ?

Communities Responses -

Telugu -In the latest Mini TTT held in Hyderabad, a popular novelist was chosen, and a dedicated team was made to proof read, approve and validate and a there has been a considerable improvement. This is a successful activity. We come across a few youngsters who collaborated actively.

Bengali -In our community we update the writers details in wikidata, here it is (https://bn.wikisource.org/s/su)

Odia- 1. In Odia community we complete a book till validation than start another book. Don't keep a book in half done stage. Once a book started will be completed by all editors till its transclusion

2. I love the work of Bangla, Tamil communities. Even Jayant Nath had taught some good things which is really helpful for Wikisource.

Hindi- We don't allow without scan pages. We created more than 30 thousand pages and validated 6 books with more than 2 dozen active users.

Punjabi- We are encouraging more people to join Wikisource. We uploaded different type of books so editor can choose any book type which they want. We regularly do online or offline events.
