New "rename" step added[edit]

  • I have added a new - if short - step in the translation process. After the text has been translated, the title should also be translated by renaming the title by using the "move" tab. The "Originalname/languagecode" title will remain as a #redirect page. For this , I have added a reminder on the top of Translations/status/created and Translations/status/translated.

Question about translation of the title of the page[edit]

I have read that the page to be translate should be moved to a name in the translating language. But should it be moved inside the Translation requests/ page-space or should the page directly in the namespace? Let me give an example to make easier understand my obscure question: If there is a request to translate a page that has Example title in English, we have a translation request at Translation requests/Example, with its source at Translation requests/Example/source and the Italian version would be created at Translation requests/Example/It . Now where should I move the page? (The translation of Example into Italian is Esempio). Should it be the page Esempio , the page Translation requests/Esempio , the page Translation requests/Example/Esempio , the page Translation requests/Example/it/Esempio , or what else?

(and the same question if the requestion is in the Translation requests/WMF/ page-space.)


I have note that the link made by the template Translations/status/copyedited no longer works correctly (and perhaps the same happens to other templates listed on the [[2]] page). The cascade of template is rather difficult, I have tried to see how they work, but I always lost myself somewhere in the middle.

The Translations/status/copyedited made use of the BASEPAGENAME variable to create the link, hence the problem. Some problem need instead to be created using the original page, so they should use the value of the page parameter, in the first call to the Template:Translation , but I am not aware if this parameter reach or not these templates. -- AnyFile 13:26, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

fr-'Translations' item in the navigation box[edit]

'Translations' appears on the left sight of the french interface. It is a false friend and an anglicism to us. The word should be Traductions.

I see some other items & boxes remain in English, so this may be intentional due to the linked page language. We could the print it as (en) Traductions ?

Different language Wikipedia pages for the same topic- Translation: Machine Vs Human of All Pages in All Languages[edit]

Any topic in any language can be translated by human or machine; the latter is no substitute for the former; contextual meaning is often inaccurate in the latter. However, Wikipedias in different languages should have feature for machine auto-tanslation which can exponentially expand reach for the contents the UniverseWiki; current features on any page in any language has a feature to access same topic oriniginal article written in that native language, but another feature for auto-translation on-the-fly or indicator of available human translation may help e.g. by Bing Translator as possibly preferred for a such study for Side by Side feature of ability to view two languages, the original and machine translation to understand the gist; auto-translation is no substitute for a professional human translator.

The following may help understand the extent of problems and opportunities to learn from Wikipedias in other languages; language barrier can be overcome. Topic title listed in language barrier :

  • Same Topic in Different Language Wikipedia- Divergence & Similarities in Study of any Subject ..include also opportunities to learn and cross feed.
  • Different language Wikipedia pages for the same topic for e.g. the English page AF447 and the French page and respective talk pages Vol 447 Air France are likely to have divergence and similarities in evolution of study of any subject at hand; ability to cross contribute the content save Language barrier needs further study by active contributors of their respective language pages ........Language is no barrier.
  • Any page in any Wikipedia should have a machine auto-translation feature to help understand atleast the gist of the article; existing links on all pages in languages are for the the original pages in those respective languages. Importance of translation of all the articles that Wikipedia has in different languages is emphasised; machine auto-translation feature on any page and talk pages in any langnguage Wikipedia would suffice and for intensive study human translators available in Wikipedias would help. How similar are the pages in the various language versions of Wikipedia[edit]

I am a newbie to this metawiki. I have a few questions about language versions. Hopefully someone can help me. Are the entries in one language necessarily the same as another? Presumably? original articles can be created in any of the 282 listed languages. So there can be different articles on the same subject? E.g. If a German page and an English page are created independently by different authors, the page content will be different. If so, how does Wikipedia deal with this? Language versions are full independent, there's no limit to differences in the texts of articles. Nemo 19:11, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Translation request: WMF/Staff[edit]

The wmf:Staff article has been moved on the foundation wiki to wmf:Staff and contractors and seems to have been updated there. Because of this, the English (source) version Translation requests/WMF/Staff/en is obsolete. Please move the translation request to Translation requests/WMF/Staff and contractors and update the English version. Revamp of page[edit]

Hi, everyone.

I have been working on a revamp of this page, currently located at User:Jsoby/Translation requests. It is not quite finished, but I think it would still be good to get some feedback from anyone reading this talk page. The main goal of the revamp is to make the page simpler to use for everyone, and to bring more information about the individual requests to the page itself. You may notice it only lists requests that use the Translate extension; I feel that most (if not all) other requests on this page are/were (me and Thehelpfulone removed quite a few yesterday) either very outdated or need to be moved over to the translate extension, so going forward we should focus more on the active requests only.

I would love to have feedback on what should be changed or improved with that page in mind. Some of the things me and Siko have identified so far (but haven't put in yet) are improved workflow (making it as easy as possible to see what to do and how to do it), as well as some focus on proofreading.

There is also another page I've been working on, User:Jsoby/Request translation – the point of that page is for people to ask translation administrators with help marking a page for translation and putting the request up on this page, as well as announce it on translators-l. Any feedback on that as well would be nice.

PS! I am going on vacation until the end of April, but I will check in here in irregular intervals – the timing of this post is a bit bad if there are many questions/suggestions, but I will get to them as soon as I can. :-) Jon Harald Søby (WMF) (talk) 00:07, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

I don't understand if all the open requests under the old system have been moved to this new page. Rather, I now see that my (absolutely active) requests for WikiGuide translations have been removed, so several have been lost I see. They should be recovered, but I don't see how (the previous system was much more efficient than this manual listing which I don't understand). Nemo 15:56, 19 May 2012 (UTC)
  • As expected, people were no longer updating this page manually because it's too tedious compared to the automatic features of the Translate extension: I've therefore removed the manual listing and restored the automatic listing of the old-system requests.
  • I also had improved the instructions to reduce duplication with other pages, but there was no way to merge the Babylon quickly right now, so I just moved the portal-like pointers to Meta:Babylon (which is linked from the sidebar) by updating it, and delinked this page from the sidebar, pointing to Special:LanguageStats which is were translators can find what they need (including the link to help documentation). --Nemo 12:26, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Bad translations and grammar into English[edit]

Just one small maddening thing about Wiki. Though most non-English speakers make a good stab - and sometimes even heroic leaps! - at this maddening language, they normally come up just a bit shy of what they are truly trying to convey.

I'm an author and marketing guy with long experience in dealing with how the written word connects with the human mind. I simply find that Wiki material needs only a tweak of two to bring it in line with what your viewers hunger for, in terms of clarity and engagement of the imagination.

Just five minutes ago I throttled through your page on the author, Franzobel. It took me about six minutes to put it into perfected vernacular and descriptive and evocative English.

I'm very interested in working with you to make some pretty damn good efforts currently being made to present your stuff in somewhat 'clarified' English. Keeping the authors' intent, the experiential aspects of what they're writing about, running all of this through various 'filters' that exist only in my brain and then shunting it back to you. Essentially, I would then become a very creative and thorough editor and wordsmith. Piece of cake? Nope. But intriguing. And I do hope to hear back from whomever this computer's message lands on.

Me too – we don't know what caused this yet, but it might have been because I was on a bad Internet connection when I sent the notification (thus causing the form to send the request twice). Someone "stole" my translation[edit]

I translated a message but when I wanted to save it I got an error message (something like "invalid token"). When I reloaded the page I found out that somebody already translated this part in the meantime. Is it possible to lock a section I am working on such that work is not made twice and wasted once? --XXLRay (talk) 16:41, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately there isn't at this time – just like with Wikipedia articles, edit conflicts may happen from time to time. With surges of activity such as this (after the notification was sent out), they may happen more frequently. If your language is one of the bigger ones with many translators, a tip could be to wait for a few hours before you translate, which hopefully wouldn't create that many edit conflicts. Are you sure that the translation was someone else's? The advanced translation editor keeps you translation in cache even if it's not saved, quite often, so perhaps you only had to save it. --Nemo 09:41, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Double notification[edit]

Editing Translation[edit]

Hello, perhaps you tried to edit the page directly? You have to click the "translate" link at the top of the page, see also e.g. Special:LanguageStats/fr which will bring you to the correct place and the help page. --Nemo 15:08, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Layout, slow-ups or lost savings?[edit]

I've been trying to do the final works on the july-report (Budget, Hispano.WMF-meet, Berlin etc). After a while the saved translations got off-screen, so now I don't know if my struggles have been in vain, and some small parts got doubled up. Hopefully it is the system being slow, but it will be better to have the saved parts coming up in translated text quickly.
Also I don't enjoy the layout of the work-sheet which doesn't discriminate between trifles and serious stuff. It might be simpler to have some of the headlines integrated with the content, just to avoid all the headings -> "save - did I lose this one?"

Hello, thank you for your feedback and patience: I'm sorry to hear you had problems, I hope you can explain us better because I don't understand what the problem is. Translations mustn't "go off-screen", do you mean that the the translation editor wasn't big enough to contain the text? Remove formatting like headers from translators responsibility?[edit]

Hi! I helped out with translating a year ago, and I must say the experience has improved quite a lot! However, I have one idea to improve it even further. When translating a "header", I have to add the formatting characters too:

The formatting characters for such headers is easy to forget, and really should *not* differ from language to language anyway. Forcing the translator to keep track of them will make the translations look different (human error). Could not the system just add these automatically, if the user forgets? --Objarni (talk) 06:45, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

I don't understand, are you saying that you don't want to enter the = characters? How can one forget them if they're on the source message? And how do you suggest to communicate the translator that those are headers? See also the docs for translation administrators for more detail. --Nemo 09:17, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer, that doc link will come in handy I'm sure. Try at explaining: In the context of doing the translation, as a user of this translation system, I only get to see the exact messages to translate (default behaviour of system). I do not see a preview of the translated page, nor the original page (I'm sure there is a link *somewhere*, it's just not obvious where). That is actually a problem in itself (as I believe context is important to do a good translation), but I think you might understand what I mean about not having to care about number of equals symbols surrounding headers if you watch this picture. Since I stated my question, I did find the "arrow down" feature which copies the original text to the translation edit field, making this mistake less probable. Maybe the default value, when starting to translate an untranslated snippet, should be the original snippet text, instead of users having to click a non-conventional arrow to get the text copied down? On a more general note, I think the kind of usability/grokkability issues I raise would be removed if one of the designers of this system did a small tutorial video (vimeo?) on how the system is used. Opt-out[edit]

Hi, How can I opt out from translation project? In a signup page there is no such option, and I can't leave all languages blank. The only option I found is to choose a rare language and disable all communications methods, but I don't like it...--Green fr (talk) 14:52, 20 September 2012 (UTC)

Translating Wiktionary Words into a new language[edit]

Can one start translating Wiktionary words from English into a new language that is not on the list? In my case it is Lugbara (Code: lgg) which is not a Wikimedia language but has over 1 Million users. A Lugbara Wiktionary can be a great help to both foreigners and the natives. Did you take a look at Language proposal policy and Requests for new languages? I believe these pages should address what you need to know. I think translating entries from other language editions is fairly common in Wiktionaries. If you are interested in explaining them in English, you can of course do it on the English Wiktionary, too. However, I'm afraid that this particular page is not for content translations like translating Wiktionary. --whym (talk) 04:48, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

I indicated that I would translate into English, but I can only translate from French, Italian or Spanish. It would be good to be able to specify.

Confused about translating into English - MarcoAurelio says it can't be done.[edit]

Failed to access translation for November 2012[edit]

I tried to translate the notice for November 2012, but failed to edit any text. I used to translate the transcript of the donation promotion. Do I need some special authorities? --Tomchiukc (talk) 19:39, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Is it about this translation? Note that one cannot create the translated page directly (e.g. Wikimedia Highlights, November 2012/zh) - instead, follow the link in the error message ("... the translation can be updated using the translation tool"), or the "Translate this page" link on top of the original page. There seems to be an issue with the translate extension: When attempting to open the usual "popups" to translate, nothing happens. See this for example: it is impossible to open the translations normally by clicking on "↓... Committee/Page display title/es".

current best process[edit]

Is this currently the preferred way to requests translations of all sorts? Do fundraising translations follow this process? They don't show up in the timeline of requests. SJ talk  22:38, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

Hello Sj, what is "this" process? The page lists a recommended way (Translate extension) as well as old-style requests. Translations for the FR were perhaps disabled when it turned English-only, I've not checked. --Nemo 16:31, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

Removing self as translator[edit]

Hey, Sarah. You can unsubscribe by going to Special:TranslatorSignup and unchecking all the "preferred" methods of communication. Stasera non riesco a entrare attivamente più in nessuna delle solite traduzioni che stavo portando avanti.[edit]

Translations of hand out materials, etc[edit]

Pardon if I am asking in totally the wrong place and please point me if there is a better one. Is there a way to post documents that people might like to translate for their area? For instance, we have created a printable letter-size pdf describing Wikimedia grants which I imagine would be useful to have in other languages. We also plan to make some postcards. Does anyone have a suggestion? (One problem of this idea might be how to keep track of revisions to the original.) Thanks! heather walls (talk) 23:40, 9 June 2013 (UTC)

Where translations are published[edit]

Could the requests for translations include information about where the translations will be published? In small language communities it is not possible to translate everything. Translations cant't be saved[edit]

If I make a translation and hit the blue "save translation" button, my translation appears with a yellow background next to the original text, but when I leave the page my translations are gone. This appears here. --LordOider (talk) 19:12, 6 October 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, but changing the user interface to English doesn't really help. Tried it several times and only one translation, after hitting the tab 'all', was saved properly. But I couldn't reproduce this. --LordOider (talk) 14:56, 7 October 2013 (UTC)

Wikimedia LGBT and category sorting question[edit]

Wikimedia LGBT is currently seeking assistance with translating project pages in all languages. I have sent talk page requests to specific editors who I have seen help with translations here at Meta, but all translators are welcome.

Also, please see this question regarding category sorting and translated pages. It does not seem intuitive to sort pages based on language instead of page content. Is this normal? --Another Believer (talk) 17:48, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Wikimania banner[edit]

Mailing lists/List info[edit]

Special:translate page [4] says that page cannot be translated to Malayalam because a translation admin decides so. I wonder why!--Praveen:talk 02:30, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi, the page is not translatable to every language bluntly for the purpose of not wasting translators time like yours. Currently, the only use of that page is to provide translations for Mailman and said translations or handled via puppet. [5] Mailman does not actually have every single language translated in its software and languages which don't match the ones it has translated are not registered which unfortunately means the language you wanted to translate it into would never be displayed until Mailman itself is translated to the language. Possible translation issue[edit]

Hello! I'm having some trouble translating Wikimedia Highlights, October 2014 into Ukrainian. Namely, when I translate longer paragraphs and click Save, the translation appears to be saved but disappears shortly after (for ex. as soon as I try to renew "Untranslated" view). As I wrote above, I was translating Wikimedia Highlights, October 2014. Below are the parts I've translated couple of times, but they were not saved:
"The mobile Wikipedia apps for Android and iOS added a "Nearby" feature in October. It retrieves a list of Wikipedia articles near the user's current location and shows their relative distance. A compass arrow points to the direction for each location and updates as one moves. A single tap on an entry opens the article for reading, and a long press opens a map view."
"A portrait on the Wikimedia blog decribed how Hans Oleander, a tour guide on expeditions in Antarctica, uses an offline version of Wikipedia with the Kiwix software. It enables him to quickly research facts in an area with no Internet access, to prepare lectures and answer a wide range of questions from tourists about Antarctica."

Interestingly, the two units you didn't manage to save contain non-whitelisted external links (Google and Apple), while all the units you manage to save don't. However it might be a coincidence: I don't see anything in AbuseFilter logs and it shouldn't be a captcha issue because you are autoconfirmed and even unregistered users managed to save. I can't think of anything that would be special for uk or your account. --Nemo 15:32, 6 December 2014 (UTC)
