Template talk:LinkSummary

[edit] Layout 1
Just wanted to suggest a new layout for this template to make it more readable. All the same links (now everything is a plainlink) are there, and I think this is easier to read and use. It also has a different background colour so you can easily distinguish this from surrounding discussion. The hrules top and bottom are just to emphasize that this is separate from anything surrounding it. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:44, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
- {{{1}}}
- (Wikipedia: en | fr | de) (Search: Google | meta | backlinks)
- (LinkSearch: meta | en | de | fr | simple | wikt:en | wikt:fr | biggest 20/57 Wikipedias)
(Domain: domaintools | AboutUs | DomainsDB | Alexa | OnSameHost | WhosOnMyServer)
- (Reports: COIBot | SpamReportBot | en | Eagle's spam report search)
- I like it, what is the effect when there are 50 LinkSummary templates on one page .. how does it affect loading time? --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 10:46, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
- I meant the amount of html is creates, the spam report pages tend to get very long sometimes, and then a lot of html influences the loading time. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 15:26, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
- If there's a difference, it's not significant, I'd say. It's inclusions and parserfunctions which make the real difference. As we don't use parserfunctions, the way to reduce load times is to reduce inclusions. Many of the other templates we use, like {{not done}}, {{added}} etc. can be substed, as there's no need for those to ever be updated. Also, those ones have small amounts of markup, so substing them doesn't make a mess. This one would make a mess if you substed though; I don't recommend that. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 22:45, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

- I recently added http://www.whosonmyserver.com/ to the en.wikipedia version, en:Template:LinkSummary. It's been giving me better results than domainsdb.net (which has been down recently) and onsamehost.com. 75% of the time, there's no correlation between the host IPs a domain is on and the other domains a spammer owns. Occasionally, however, the spammers will own their own servers or contract for a dedicated server. If I'm looking for sites related to venicetravelspam.com and find it's on the same IP as innsbrucktravelspam.com, greecetravelspam.com and 15 other sites with similar names, I now know what other spam to look for (and possibly blacklist).

[edit] Layout 2
I have added a parameter in the template "nofloat", which removes the lines and newline formatting (giving a plain list of the links on one line. Now the numbering in e.g. User:COIBot/COIReports/2008,_Dec_14 should be continuous. However, I do seem to have a bot of problem here and there. Will tweak a bit further. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 16:20, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
- Have curious problem with a newline which is not in the template (as far as I can see). --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 16:43, 14 December 2008 (UTC)
[edit] "find sbl entry"
Hi!
I guess, it would be more meaningful to name the link to [1] not "seth's" but "find entry" or "find sbl entry". Ok? (another small advantage would be, that I could more easily find my commments...*g*) -- seth 23:44, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
- Totally agree. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 09:23, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
By convention, tools are named after their creator or the filename of the source code: Luxo's tool, VVV's tool/sulutil, crossblock, etc... grep_regexp_from_url isn't so catchy, so I used seth :) But yes, I do see your point. — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 20:35, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
[edit] merl/findexternallinks
Can Merlissimo's search be added? --Jorunn 10:02, 3 January 2010 (UTC)
[edit] "Largest 20/50 wikipedias" is broken because the user account for Eagle is expired.
The "largest 20/50 wikipedias" is broken because user:Eagle at toolserver is expired, see, for example, [2]. This results in wasted effort on the part of those reading Talk:Spam blacklist. Either the problem with Eagle's tool should be fixed, or the link to the tool removed from the template, and probably the link should be removed immediately, because it can easily be put back when the tool is fixed, if it is. --Abd 01:18, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
[edit] update template links and formatting
I have updated the links to be relative and/or local where possible, redone the formatting, and removed dead/superfluous links. It may be time to redo the graphic that is there to assist. billinghurst sDrewth 07:23, 28 November 2011 (UTC)
