Does anyone think that this page should outline the scope of the existing projects to avoid overlap? Especially with some of the rather less known parts of Wikimedia (Wikipedia reference desk, Wikibooks How-tos bookshelf and Cookbook, Wiktionary's various glossaries, appendices and translations, all the stuff on Commons and Wikisource) it's rather important that anyone reading the page be aware that these exist. We have quite a few proposals on this page that already are covered by existing projects. This seems to indicate that many people are unaware of these projects. --[[User:Yair rand|Yair rand]] 05:22, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

==SUGGESTION (Special Wiki MEDIA DONATION project): A NEW HIGHLY EFFICIENT WAY FOR WORLD PUBLIC TO DONATE IMAGES AND VIDEO TO WIKIPEDIA/WIKIMEDIA/COMMONS etc.==

* There should a link on every wiki family project page saying "DONATE AN IMAGE OR VIDEO". Anyone should be able to click on it and make/upload a media donation easily, SPECIALLY SELF CREATED WORK with the profusion of relatively cheap personal devices available now in the NEW AGE.
* In the donation form there should be all related disclosures and and Licenses that the donater can choose regarding donating a particular work.
* There should be place where Donater has to fill all related information related to media being donated like location, subject, time, basic info about self, etc. and details if from other source.
* People should be able to send copyrighted/unusable images to make suggestion of what we are missing and which we can put out on a list of required media, this list may be easily available to public view and/or ciculated.
* There should be an email address to where images/video/media can be emailed, clearly stating that the donater has read the various disclosures and licenses (on our website or our news release requesting media donations) and he is donating under which license. Once a media donation email is received to a special mail account: 1) once an email media donation is received from the donater and automatic (from wikipedia/media/commons etc.) email should go out to their address from our no-reply email address reminding them to read, in mail, provided disclousers and provide appropriate license and info for use again. Donater should be asked to email back the reply keeping the same address line explaining preference will be given to media donations which have been replied to, hence making them more usable earlier. 2) It should be available in an online archive for mining by users looking for images for articles they are working on and the public at large.
* Replied email donations with disclosures read and licences provided and direct media donations by clicking on link should be at all times available to our users and world public at large and journalists etc. There should be a warning to them to make sure BY THEMSELVES that they check (what could be our mostly unsupervised database) out if the donation has been made properly and if donater has read disclosures and provided consent and chosen the license properly. Users should be provided a basic guideline on how to make sure if the image/media is good.
* Proper donations should ask for keywords that should activate various tags for easy mining of donated database.
* The whole online media donation/uploading process should be VERY SIMPLIFIED with users asked to click/select choices with one click only from various choices after reading all. Short Disclosers should be page wise only, advancable by clicking NEXT so that all get read. Licenses should be chosen by a simple click from a choice. Media Info should be requested by filling blank by blank advancable software, including location, subject, time, DATE, donator info etc.
* This Media donation project should be centralized in commons with centralized email for donations. Project should be accessible from all wiki family projects from all their pages at all times by clicking.
* There should be a special option/Tags setting alerts for media donations regarding HAPPENING EVENTS and that should make news where world journalists/News companies can find Important or Immediate topics to pursue and other agencies like Aid agencies etc. to find places and subjects to assist. A media related to citizen reporting a historical national monument in bad shape should have the potential to trigger positive action to conserve. Potentially database mining should be able to facilitate new discoveries and affirmative action in right direction and build a tremendous world resource to record history/historical period datewise over the decades.
* Anyone mining the database should be able to setup warnings with a simple click about offending/sexually explicit/illegal images and special users with experience and extra powers should be able to either remove the image or make it invisible where in doubt.
* Should an option be provided where users of this donated media like journalists/new companies can provide citation like: Donated media from wikicommons server by ..(name of original donator).
* Donators should be able to choose their nonconflicting wiki User name, and make it a Tag, so that by clicking on name tag all images donated by the users can lineup in a online gallery for public and for donator to promote himself in other/outside professional media fields, if he chooses to provide link to this online portfolio.
* There should be a clear warning that there is no monetary compensation by wikicommons for media donation of any kind, it is a DONATION.
* Wikicommons software should be able to mine technical info of media if possible and provide the same online for researchers, sometimes it may include type of camera used, aperture, date, time of day and in the near future models, the GPS position/coordinates of where the media was made. If needed donator should be asked to give consent to publish this info.
* Public/Users should be requested to make media for donation with no recognizable faces/adertising/brand names as that may trigger having to take permission from people etc. shown in media made or fuzzing their faces/advertising/brand names etc.

Please forward to concerned persons/department for brainstorming and fine tuning.

I got the above idea while creating the article on [[Karvi]] shrub which only flowers once in eight years before dying.

Thanks

Revision as of 00:26, 26 January 2010

Note: A proposal has been made to reform this system.

Framing and starting a project

To create a new wiki, start an initial site right away! You can start it on an existing wiki such as this one, in your userspace (to brainstorm), or on a wikifarm. Use this as a demo to later be promoted to a Wikimedia Foundation project if there is sufficient interest. You may want to read the Wikipedia timeline and Wiki page on uses of a wiki.

  • Proposal archives: 1, 2, 3
  • Discussion archives: 1, 2, 3, 4

Before posting a new project idea:

Feel free to make informal proposals here, or to discuss the main proposals page. To take responsibility for a proposal, post it on the main page in the recommended format.

I do not understand. Contribute to what? People could only contribute to it once it became a project, which it most likely won't because it overlaps with an existing project. Or, if you are not proposing a new project but attempting to advertise an existing one as you did above, please be aware that that is NOT the purpose of this page. --Yair rand 04:25, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

MyWikipedia

Proposers User:subcomandante84 (04 October 2009).   Mailing list request: none yet
Overview MyWikipedia, customization of Website, or social communities has become a trend, you have it on myspace, facebook, or all the other social communities. What i would mean with MyWikipedia would mean, that the user could choose, the layout of his Wikipedia, change the colour, fonts, regroup his own Wikipedia Startscreen. There are people who are not interested in all categories of Wikipedia, so they could get the themes there are interested in, and without having to search for long, they sign in through MyWikipedia and with every LogIn they get there customized Wikipedia Startpage, they see on a chronik which articles they have read and get suggestions for articles which could be from interest to them. Web has become interaktiv today, the user wants to customize his favourite pages like he wants. Its not my thinking, but a lot of people nowadays are thinking like that, and perhaps they are bored of the everytime same Startscreen of Wikipedia, its not a critic, its not my thinking, but there are people thinking like that. But for gathering more users perhaps sometimes its not that bad to follow trends.

RealGovWiki

I'm posting a news release for RealGov.com below, which I hope will suffice for a proposal. My apologies if this is not the accepted format or protocol. This is being done through a non-profit, while the concept was developed by Edison Innovations.

While it is called RealGov now, it could be WikiGov or something similar. Even if Wiki Foundation isn't interested in doing this, we would like to and seek those who are experienced with MediaWiki to help implement the project.

WikiPrice

Wouldn't it be great to know the price of any item sold anywhere in the world via any merchant on any given date? It would be a great database updated constantly by people worldwide to track the prices of all items sold anytime. Data can then be used to track trends, price differentials across regions etc. It would be like a twitter for prices.

Backstory

I noticed gas price sites would publish the latest on gas prices at various locations, and i could search and find the station where it was the cheapest. Now imagine the same information, but available for all goods solds worldwide. For e.g if you bought an Ipod from Apple Store on a given data for a set price, you can publish it on the wiki. Now imagine millions of people doing the same, and then we can track how prices are moving region wise, how there are differentials based on economic conditions, obsolescence of products and so on. It would be a great tool to spread market efficiency on all products.... it would help companies plan their pricing strategies, consumers would be more well aware of prices of common goods available closer to home etc... -- Vishwanath Donti

WikiCalendar

This would automatically work with various national calendars.
It would include categories, so that on any day of the year, you can show/hide categories.
There would be views: Day, week, month, timeline.
You could add your own calendar events with Template:Personal which turns to your own user category.

Template:Work Template:All day event.

Categories can be public or group enabled.
There would be of course groups, which further filter down the information.
This way, I can see all events that have to do with my family (so they interest only me), or with some dynasty my family is in. Or some historic fact I wish to follow (World War I), or history of Boka-Wina.
I can then add information to the dates as I discover it. Pashute 15:11, 14 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

WikiPeople

A separate wiki space where full detailes of the wiki member can be added. They may include Pic there short history by themselves, birth place, home town, ther interests and many more things. It would be like a chain linkes as there details would redirect to information stored on wiki server, eg home town delhi, then clicking on delhi will link to details about delhi on wikipedia and many more lins like it. and moreover the people profiles will be available on google search engine so that peple find it easy to know the details of the person searched for . just like an directory. well the profile may contain orkut profile link, facebook link, IM dettails and many more things... Surely its gonna be a success as people will find it very easy to know and search for a particular person on google and get the details and make a contact with them.. well this idea came to me and i pen it down..

Wikimedia project of animations and learning games

I proposal a wikimedia project more dynamic that helps us understand the wikipedia articles and multimedia files of Commons and how they are related. A Wikimedia project that contains animations and educational games on some topic encyclopedic as those in the encarta. Clearly this would be done by progamer and computer and computer animation or amateur who can do a good job.

For example it is easier to know how they are connected organs, systems of the human being with an animation showing the complexity of the human body can be applied equally to other subjects. Another example would show how they have changed the political landscape in Europe since antiquity would be a good idea an animation that shows this issue and can be paused by the observer if desired.

In the case of educational games I remember that in 2004 there encarta assemble one of the Wright brothers' plane, one to assemble the bones of a dinosaur and one on musical instruments in the world and each of these was explained. Also on Encarta 2004 was a learning game animation that will explain the voyage of Magellan, etc.

What they think about this idea? and What is the best way to name it?. Please write me to the Wikipedia in Spanish. --Juan Miguel 04:08, 15 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikiimprove

Proposers User:subcomandante84 (30 September 2009).   Mailing list request: none yet
Overview Wikiimprove would be an own Wiki were you save the articles which are deleted from Wikipedia due to quality problems. Like i understood the idea of the Wikipedia Founders they wanted to creat a modern biblioteca alexandria, a collection of the knowledge of the world. If you delete an article,

the knowledge and also the work of the article, is lost forever, i would classify the articles by quality and articles which can be improved could be saved for the community. So people with special knowledge of certain themes can help people who have perhaps not that knowledge of a certain theme, and so cooperation and also the community aspect of Wikipedia would be maintained. I just read an article of a newspaper who was writing how much articles are being deleted and found that a little sad.

If you are proposing that Wikipedia have an option to use Wikisaurus in editing, you should probably bring it up in w:Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) or possibly at the Wikipedia Usability Initiative instead of this page, which is for new projects. --Yair rand 12:15, 12 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Overview Documentation of the development (evolution) of Wikipedia, you can browse through the former Versions of Wikipedia f. ex. 2004, 2005, 2006..., you see the new changes: new uploaded pictures are in the category new uploaded pictures and the new articles in the category new articles, these are functions which are already in Wikipedia, but here everything would be better categorised and collected in one the Wikivolution Wiki, you see the dataamount of the different versions former, new ones, statistics about the user are made, how much data the user uploaded, how much articles, words he wrote on Wikipedia. Its a project to document the Wikipedia for future generations.

  • What would be the purpose of this project? All former revisions are saved as are lists of user contributions. You just click the History tab at the top of the page to see old revisions. Why would we need a separate project to document changes? --Yair rand 14:21, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
  • I thaught that project as a documentation of the wikipedia, the more Wikipedia grows the more Information it contains, and the more unclear it gets, so by creating a project beside where the evolution of the wiki is stored and documented, it would be first more clear, and you would also have better possibility to search for specific changes, by categories, Time, date,... You could see statistiscs, user related, articles related,... It is not meant as a replacement of the current history, but much more a compliment to show the big changes and steps of Wikipedia, ok was it was just an idea, i just had a few ideas in my head which i wanted to share with the project, and wanted to contribute something to the project.

WikiMobile

Proposers 7cows (28 - December - 2006).   Mailing list request:
Overview a Mobile Wiki page for each Wiki page. This function would allows users to select a summary of text for users on the go (like mobiles) or using devices with limited screen space. Main reason why this would be more sucessful then google: Users on Cellphones (mobiles) generally are paying for Internet data traffic, slow connection and limited small screen to sift through wanted info. A google search would most likely turn a lot of unwanted websites that don't address info that user is specifically looking for and not in a mobile friendly format. If a WikiMobile search was put in place all mobile search requests would be easy to access and a super convenient tool to have on the fly.

  • Well, We all know w:en:Texperts and AQA. These companies respond to SMS questions from the UK via a shortcode. So you text in your question, and you get back an answer in 160 characters. "Who is Bill Gates", or "What is turkey stuffing made of", or "What's the date for easter this year". A similar (perhaps commercial too) wiki can be made, where articles are limited to 1 text (160 characters), or maybe two, such that a person can text in their question ("Bill Gates?", "Turkey Stuffing?", "Easter 2008?") to WikiSMS, and would get the answer immediately. The answers will be set by the community, it will be less work than existing projects, and we already have millions of articles which can be used to extract info from to fit into one SMS. Something to think about !! and dont forget me when you start making millions with this idea wikimedia foundation !!! ;).

How does one post a project to the new projects section? It appears to be locked.

Larrymac 21:43, 3 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is only semi-protected which means you will be able to edit after you have had an account for a few more days. Instead of waiting, you could add your content to this talk page and someone else could copy it over to the proposals page for you. Another option is to post to the mailing list before adding the proposal here. Angela 05:47, 6 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

OK, Angela. Thanks for your help.

Options for page size reduction

I wandered by Meta and came up with some possibilities for cutting down on the size of this page. There's a form for creating a new proposal page that preloads a new proposal page with the important headings. Then there are two different options for displaying proposals in a more compact manner. The top display retains most of the format of the existing page in using headings, while the bottom display borrows from the methodology in Requests for new languages and offers sorting. I'd create a template for listing projects on the page, with its content depending on which version people like most. Thoughts? -- Adrignola 22:17, 23 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I like it, but I think the "Comments" and "People interested" sections should go under the project. And what exactly does "Area" refer to? --Yair rand 03:49, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the feedback. Those sections are under the project, at least for the first option. I added some headings to the sandbox page to make it easier to see that there are two examples shown on that page. For the second option, I changed "Area" to "Type". That column would allow for sorting and classifying proposals in the table, the way proposals are manually filed under headings now. The top option would require manual sorting as is the case now, but the bottom would allow you to simply click the sort arrow on the "Type" column to sort by the type of proposal. Either option one or option two would be used, but not both. -- Adrignola 04:29, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh. I think option two would be better, assuming that you mean listing all the proposed projects in a table. Either of them would be far better than what we have now. --Yair rand 04:10, 8 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Existing projects scope

Does anyone think that this page should outline the scope of the existing projects to avoid overlap? Especially with some of the rather less known parts of Wikimedia (Wikipedia reference desk, Wikibooks How-tos bookshelf and Cookbook, Wiktionary's various glossaries, appendices and translations, all the stuff on Commons and Wikisource) it's rather important that anyone reading the page be aware that these exist. We have quite a few proposals on this page that already are covered by existing projects. This seems to indicate that many people are unaware of these projects. --Yair rand 05:22, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bookshelves are being phased out at Wikibooks, with books that are a how-to being filed based on their subject matter and not simply because they are a "how-to". It's also questionable whether the Cookbook really is within Wikibooks' scope, but the community is not active enough to debate the issue as it did with Wikiversity before it was split off. It does appear that there was some effort to mention existing projects on this page but the implementation certainly leaves room for improvement. -- Adrignola 13:17, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
