The associated page is used by the Mediawiki SpamBlacklist extension, and lists strings of text that may not be used in URLs in any page in Wikimedia Foundation projects (as well as many external wikis). Any meta administrator can edit the spam blacklist. Please post comments to the appropriate section below: Proposed additions, Proposed removals, Troubleshooting and problems, or Other discussions; read the messageboxes at the top of each section for an explanation. Also, please check back some time after submitting, there could be questions regarding your request. Per-project whitelists are discussed at MediaWiki talk:Spam-whitelist.

Completed requests are archived, additions and removal are logged.

Spam blacklist is protected as a sensitive page, although it is not located in the MediaWiki namespace for technical reasons. Users may use this talk page to discuss changes.

Proposed additions

This section is for proposing that a website be blacklisted; add new entries at the bottom of the section, using the basic URL so that there is no link (google.ca, not http://www.google.ca). Provide links demonstrating widespread spamming by multiple users. Completed requests will be marked as done or denied and archived.

Due to the way this search engine works, it seems you can restrict it to your site and also get it to display your ads/links in a frame around the returned search results, without either being obvious in the URL linked to. Only a couple of users doing this thus far, see here, but will probably get worse. Linkfarm additions

I got a whole mess of additions which I would like to add - over 280 links. I've been tracking an anonymous user who keeps adding links to Wikipedia that link to a set of pornstar photo sites that are presumably under his control. Given the length of the list I think it might be impratical to list then here, but the full list of items can be seen here on a sublink of my user page: en:User:Tabercil\Porn Linkspam. Sorry. Didn't realize the format I used on the article made it difficult for you to find the spam links in question. I've reformatted the page to show first the link which was spammed, then just below it the article in question and how many times it was changed. Hopefully, this works for you better. Personal website of a "spamming and rude" ccontributor. This link was ever removed by administrator's decision, because it violate several WP rules: no autopromotion, avoid personnal webpages, limitation of external links to believable sources, ... Pgreenfinch uses edition war to continue promoting its own website, which also promote author's personal "original theories" without any beginning of academical caution.

Not done. We can't deny only astore.amazon.com/chuvashiaportal, we should ban the whole astore.amazon.com, and I think it is not sensible. I would recommend that English Wikipedia bans the whole subnetwork 217.106.166.* - it might be the easiest solution. IP 67.99.92.2 has been spamming several Wikipedia pages with petroleum-s.com/petition. This URL ponts to xxell.com This is the same website that a blacklisted URL, complexxon.org, points to. Others, including gasroot.com, llp3.com, europaque.eu, oil-gas.eu, and malh.eu also go there.

I've tidied up the regular expressions and removed the domains belonging to the Australian politicians he's handed back. Generic comercial website about rap being added in articles about rap artists using diferent IPs, all of them at pt.wiki. After at least three IP blocks and one article block for IP edits, the problem is still present. Some examples:

ezpicking.com is repeatedly spamming their website in all lockpick/lock related articles on Wikipedia. I have requested numerous times to stop as have several other admins. We have to date blocked 5 sockpuppet accounts for spamming this site. Alkivar (sysop on En Wiki). 22:49, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Links to this site have been spammed to at least 371 articles by multiple IPs. The site is essentially a blog site dressed in a suit - it consists of "freelance writers" submitting their own articles, none of which require sources or peer review of any kind (ie Original Research). They pay their editors based on page views, and encourage them to use SEO techniques to spam their articles across the web. See the relevant discussion on en at WikiProject Spam: [85]. Hi - my name is Peter Berger, I am representing Suite101. I would like to assure you we are not a spam site, but have contracted writers who we screen for content knowledge and writing skills. Our site is basically very similar to about.com (which is receiving a lot of references from Wikipedia); our freelance writers are experts in their field and we do not influence them how and on what they should write. As we correct any errors on our site whenever we find them, Suite101 is a safe site to refer users to. We have always been very proud that a lot of Wikipedia users found our articles worthwhile reference, so I think it is unfair to our readers and writers to simply blacklist any links to articles simply based on the fact they are hosted on our site. Actually, simple search shows that this domain actively spams on MediaWiki sites, so it's worth blacklisting. Don't forget, this blacklist is shared among several thousands MediaWiki sites, though it's main purpose is protecting Wikimedia sites. MaxSem 19:23, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

The sonikmatter wiki isn't part of Wikimedia, but we do use MediaWiki and up until we found this spam blacklist we had dreadful problems with Spam. We are very dilligent with monitoring content and changes to our wiki, and we do maintain a local blacklist in addition to the list here, so that we can halt any spam immediately.

We submit links to this list because any spammers hitting our wiki, are likely hitting other wiki's as well. We feel that the least we can do is to be active in submitting links that are causing us problems, because it will likely be helping out others. We try to submit these links in a format that makes things as easy as possible for you guys, with links to pages showing the spam. If there is anything further that we can do to make this easier, or if you would prefer that we didn't submit links to this page, please let me know here.

We appreciate the blacklist, and what you guys do here, to maintain it. We do our best to help, but we don't want to cause any problems.

I humbly contest the validity of the links in the articles you present. The links in the articles you list were all added within the course of one hour[91] [92] [93] [94] [95] [96] by 86.138.215.110. The site is not a fansite, but part of a farm of commercial sites produced by World Cup Years LTD to sell merchandise. While mtgotraders is hardly as "bad" as some other sites, and is in fact a quality website, the fact remains that they committed some fairly bad behavior previously, and did so zealously and constantly. The tactics used previously were disruptive, and by the time someone started to actually talk as opposed to simply aggressively revert, I had already submitted the blacklist request.

Ironically enough, I myself have more liberal standards for external linking than most. However, the consensus should prevail, and so far from edit summaries the consensus seems overwhelmingly against. I posted a topic on allowing mtgotraders and other sites over at en:Talk:Magic: The Gathering#MTGOTraders. It got no replies.

I am the owner of mtgotraders and i'm pretty sure I know who did the reverting. He is a friend of mine and probably thought he was helping but in turn got my site blacklisted. I was not aware that he was doing this until I tried to post a beginners guide to MTGO that WOTC also linked to that shows a beginner the basics of MTGO with images/etc. If you could please unblacklist my site I would greatly appreciate it and feel free to ask WOTC themselves about my reputation.

I am wondering why as it already appears in a couple of related areas in wikipedia, however when adding it as an external link (as the site holding the most examples, both from the book, hiostorical and additional authors) to the Idea map page it triggered the spam filter.

I understand from the person who posted the Idea Mapping Wikipedia entry that my web address is considered spam. He is a great fan and user of idea maps and I was touched by his thoughtfulness in doing this. Now I see huge value in this as previously I was not familiar with much about Wikipedia entries, but let me share a few thoughts on why this external link to www.ideamappingsuccess.com is so critical.

One of the major reasons this book was written was to meet a huge need for people who wanted to learn to create idea maps, but couldn't afford to come to a workshop. So the purpose for linking to these maps is not to try to sell a course. One of the most powerful ways my students have learned over the last 15 years is by seeing the examples of others who have created maps. The maps in the book were not done in color (publisher said i t would be too expensive) and in some cases were too large to see in their entirity. At the core of this website is the ability for others to view the original maps and learn from these examples as well as add their own for others to see. Not only does this site contain maps from the book, but there are also some from other business professionals, children, and college students for educational purposes. These additional maps will continue to grow in numbers and applications. There are also many idea maps that were created using MindManager software. Therefore it would be extremely helpful to learners if an external link to these maps was approved for other sites that relate to those things I've mentioned above including an external link to the maps on the MindManager wikipedia entry. Because idea maps have a heritage in mind mapping, this would also be another helpful site where an external link would be helpful for learners.

My main objective is to create a huge pool of idea maps where learners can come to see a wide diversity of both hand-drawn and electronic maps. The site is clearly popular, currently in the top two search results for popular terms like 'funny clips' on both Google UK and Yahoo UK. Whilst I understand that popularity alone is obviously not enough for a site to be removed from a blacklist, similar offerings like miniclips.com do have a listing. I notice that the Daniel Brandt page on the English Wikipedia cannot link to his websites, which were placed on the Spam blacklist because they used to refer Wikipedians elsewhere. This was true the last time someone requested that these links be removed, but it is apparently no longer the case, and the discussion page for Daniel Brandt seems largely in favor of including traditional-style (rather than cut-and-paste) links. Though I just stumbled onto this article last night, I have to agree that actual links to pages like Wikipedia Watch and Google Watch would have obvious merit in this article. Though at least one user has argued that he "might do it again," i.e. redirecting our links elsewhere, I feel that a notice of his prior dirty tricks above the links is preferable to this accidental censorship via the spam blacklist. --Ourboldhero 17:20, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Request denied. Firstly, it's not "accidental censorship" - we are quite intentionally excluding his sites from being linked in Wikipedia. He's made it his mission to "out" as many administrators as possible by posting their personal information (in some cases, personal information of young children). Flymissoula.com

I am the administrator for Flymissoula.com, the OFFICIAL website for the Missoula International Airport in Missoula, Montana. I want to know why this address keeps getting removed from the Missoula Airport Wiki page? This is not a spam site, fake page or otherwise. It is the OFFICIAL airport website! Any other airport in this country is allowed to provide a link on Wiki, so why is this such a problem for Flymissoula.com? Please remove this from the blacklist immediately and allow me to post this hyperlink without further harassment.

Conceptual problems

I wasn't aware of the spam blacklist until I was just researching a topic, and tried to remove a dead link. I cannot remove the link because another link is blacklisted (I visited it, and it is 100% legit - doesn't even contain any ads). So what do I do? I can't save my edit removing the bad link as long as this blacklisted link is in place, but yet it is perfectly valid and I don't want to remove it just because Wikipedia thinks its spam. The article is Karel (programming language), the first link (link removed because the spam filter blocked it - but only when I actually submitted this post) is triggering the spam filter, the last link Robot Karol++ is what I'm trying to remove. So my comments on the spam filter system:

• If a blacklisted url is already present in an article, then editing should not trigger the spam filter. This will result in people trying to contribute something valid, receiving a warning because of a legacy url, which will likely result in their giving up and not consummating their edit.
• The spam warning should appear when previewing an edit, not just when submitting. If it doesn't appear during previews then the system will potentially waste even more of the contributor's time.
• This system takes edit wars to a whole new level. I've seen many edit wars between owners of competing websites. The spam system gives them a nice mechanism to make even more grief for their "enemy". The system certainly has uses, and at this point could possibly even be considered a necessity, however it will certainly cause new problems of its own (and hopefully they won't cause as much or more grief than the system is supposed to alleviate).
• A formal method of resolving purported spam entries that already exists in articles at the time the site was blacklisted needs to be devised. Otherwise you're putting spam removal off onto all contributors. Any other type of "housecleaning" at wikipedia happens in specific sessions. For example, I will scan articles looking for specific issues I'm wanting to resolve (usually style issues). Bots do this type of thing all the time. The way this spam filter is currently working completely breaks the normal paradigm of editing at Wikipedia. I propose it be taken down until the various issues can be properly addressed.

The moral of the story: I was trying to make a very quick, casual edit to correct an error while in "view only" mode (ie, I wasn't visiting Wikipedia to contribute, but to view information). I see I cannot make my edit because of the spam filter, so now I've got to go through an arduous process (list the site to be removed from the blacklist, monitor said site to see if / when it is removed, finally make edit) just to make one simple correction. So in a wonderful twist of irony, the broken link, which results in a page containing nothing but advertising, will remain in the story because of a good link that Wikipedia thinks is spam. I see a couple other instances of this happening to other people as posted above - those are just the cases people have taken the time to post here about. It's hard to tell how many good edits this system is preventing that are not reported. --Dan East 15:49, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

The link in question has been added to the whitelist. The link that was causing problems is from of a host that is continually used for spamming across multiple wikis. The spam filter will not be disabled for any reason due to the massive amounts of spam received. The method of requesting whitelisting on your local wiki or removal here is currently the best solution. Thanks Naconkantari 16:56, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm trying to add an inter-wiki link, "[[he:אל ליסיצקי]]" in the English and Dutch wikipedias. I get the same spam message, that links me here. What's wrong here?

Bidding fee scheme

Tried to remove what appears to be a self added link spam by User:Iphooka under Example sites for a company called Iphooka. All of the edits of this user pertain to the company. A way to fight off some spambots

A lot of spammers use generic bots that crawl pages seeking for <textarea> tag, then fill it with spam and submit. On MediaWiki sites this results in vandalous edits like this[122]. My idea is to block all external links that don't follow wiki syntax, that is <a href="blahblahbla">, [url] and so on. I've filed a feature request on this. Comments and suggestions are welcome. Quick search in the English Wikipedia shows that almost no page use it (most results are either irrelevant or have <a href= inside of <nowiki> tag e.g. Framekiller). In case there's still some such links left they'll trigger protection next time they're edited with message what to do, much like Spam blacklist works. I don't think there will be any significant collateral damage, and benefit from such measure could be nice. MaxSem 20:35, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

Blacklist shock sites.

While using VandalProof lately I've noticed a number of IP vandals replacing external links with links to shock sites such as Meatspin/etc. I see no reason why these shouldn't be blocked, as they obviously have no valid place in Wikipedia. Dark Shikari 05:05, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Here's an example. Its not that its that common, its just that there is no encyclopedic use for linking to shock sites, as far as I can tell, and an overlooked shock site link could cause havoc. Dark Shikari 01:27, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Regex pattern: fetch\.php\?media\=

I am using Regex pattern fetch\.php\?media\= to block the spammer who did this:

The spammer used 3 domain names and left 300 links while removing the original content.

To add injury to insult, the Diff and Rollback features were disabled on that page by the spam content. Not sure if it is a page size effect or a syntax effect.

You may want to find your own filter to block him.

The system administrator has not isolated the problem yet. I have seen this problem once before on our wiki server, so it may be a memory allocation limit triggered by diffing a very large post. --jwalling 21:13, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

Not done anyway. There has been unallowed using of this site so many times, that it should be blacklisted. If you wan't the link there in some specified wiki, it is possible (though I do not recommend), ask whitelisting there. This site posted links in wikipedia for many of the pages listed on their site. Over 100 schools on their site and they are continuing to add more. User:59.145.233.130, User:59.95.66.173, User:59.95.70.60, User:74.134.246.13, User:59.95.70.84, User:59.145.233.130, User:58.68.79.5 These are just a few of the IP's involved. It currently has 68 insertions in Wikipedia.
