User Group Applications

[edit]

The Affiliations Committee works with new groups seeking recognition as a Wikimedia User Group. This quarter saw further growth of new user groups with 7 new applications, 6 new user groups created, and 3 groups were declined due to overlap with existing groups without clear purpose, and 2 were withdrawn by the applicant. This compares to a quarterly average of 8 new user group applications, 5 new user groups created, and 0 declined. There were 12 user group applications in progress and/or under review from groups at the time of this quarterly reporting, compared to the average of 15.

Chapter & Thematic Organization Applications

[edit]

The Affiliations Committee also works with user groups to review their bylaws and application materials for the purpose of seeking recognition as a chapter or thematic organization. The committee does this in order to assist more developed user groups in communicating how they meet the current guidelines for recognition and to determine its recommendation to the board with regard to recognition.

The recognition and official announcements of Wikimedia Colombia as our newest chapter and Wikimedia Medicine as our newest thematic organization took place this past quarter with, official announcements of Wikimedia Thailand on hold pending finalization of the organization's legal status within Thailand. There were 2 additional user groups with chapter or thematic organization applications in active review during the period of this quarterly reporting.

Affiliate Conflict Intervention

[edit]

In addition to applications pipelines, the committee has also been attending to 8 affiliate conflict situations, a bit more than their average of 6 due to ongoing communications with a couple of formerly recognized groups.

July 2019

[edit]

As of July 15th, 18 Wikimedia Chapters/Thematic Organizations (47%) and 106 of active User Groups (93%) were up-to-date with required reporting. Due to additional demands placed on them by the Affiliate Selected Board Seats (ASBS) and Movement Strategy working group processes, several chapters and user groups faced constraints in meeting their financial reporting requirements this past quarter.
