October 2020[edit]

As of October 10th, 14 Wikimedia Chapters/Thematic Organizations (34%) and 33 active User Groups (27%) were not compliant with required reporting. Low compliance levels are typical for this time of the financial year, as this is when the majority of chapters are due for reporting, but numbers are also slightly elevated by the current COVID-19 pandemic. For the details on compliance status, view the Affiliate Status Report page.

Applications for Recognition[edit]

The Affiliations Committee works with new groups seeking recognition as a Wikimedia User Group.

Last quarter, the Affiliations Committee received eight new User Group applications and recognized one new user group. Currently, AffCom is discussing the best processes for following up with groups who withdraw or allow their applications to expire.

Two new User Group applications came in to the Affiliations Committee in the last quarter of FY19/20. During that quarter, AffCom recognized five new user groups. One application was declined, and none were withdrawn by applicants last quarter. There are seven user group applications in progress and/or under review at the time of this report, compared to the average of 10 applications for the FY19/20. The Affiliations Committee will be communicating with, and advancing review of, four user group applicants for the chapter (Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, Wikimedia Ghana User Group, Wikimedia Community User Group Georgia) or thematic organization status (WikiJournal User Group) and anticipates chapter application information from the Philippine Wikimedia Community User Group based on their meta-application page although they have yet to reach out to the committee.

Applications for Recognition[edit]

The Affiliations Committee works with new groups seeking recognition as a Wikimedia User Group.

Last quarter, the Affiliations Committee received ten new User Group applications and approved 7 during the quarter. No applications were declined, and none were withdrawn by applicants last quarter. There are 14 user group applications in progress and/or under review at the time of this report, compared to the average of 15.

The Affiliations Committee also works with user groups to review their bylaws and application materials for the purpose of seeking recognition as a chapter or thematic organization. The committee does this in order to assist more developed user groups in communicating how they meet the current guidelines for recognition and to determine its recommendation to the board with regard to recognition. Due to the sudden departure of their Chair in December, the Affiliations Committee is stalled on communicating some recognitions and on reviewing a few user group applications in the pipeline for chapter and thematic organization recognition review.
