Description
[edit]This project is to ensure the promotion of climate change in South Western Nigeria by communication students. Wikipedia is incomplete without the media. We are using this project to train communication students to understand how they will report on climate change and how important the topic climate change is to the media. We will focus on Western Nigeria to promote Climate Change articles on Wikipedia and Wikidata.
Context
[edit]We will have a training for communication students on how to contribute to climate change topics in South Western Nigeria using Wikipedia and Wikidata. This project will also help promote Wikipedia and its importance in the media space. A well-informed media about Wikipedia in Nigeria will help to promote more articles on Wikipedia and Wikidata. This challenge can only change if the media understands how important their reporting and feature stories are to having reliable sources of information on Wikipedia. The media has been under reporting climate related articles, which is why there is a huge gap in the information system on climate change. As a journalist, fact-checker, and contributor to climate-related articles on Wikipedia, I have seen the gap and the challenges we face in documenting climate-related articles in this part of the world. The problem is the information system, which already has a huge gap caused by the media. under-reported information system. This project will begin to tackle such situations by using communication students, who invariably become the journalists of tomorrow. The reporting system must change so that our documentation on Wikipedia can be accurate. They not only know how to report, but they also know how to check the archives, which will help us get sources for our articles on Wikipedia. Without reliable sources, our articles on climate change on Wikipedia can not be published for the world to see. We do not have adequate sources; the media can change that story if we begin now by ensuring good reporting in the media, which will facilitate our Wikipedia write-ups. They need to be encouraged to do more reporting on climate related issues to help us document them on Wikipedia and its sister projects.
