Description

This project is about Wikipedia trainings and edit-a-thons about climate and weather in Ruhengeri, Rwanda”. Through the African Environment Day campaign, the Wikimedians of Ruhengeri User group a fresh Wikimedia user group in movement, is looking for opportunity to join the global campaign of addressing environmental challenges facing the continent by raising awareness about climate change and environment contents on Wikimedia projects. In this way we plan to contribute to campaign by organizing the project that will hold trainings and edit-a-thons aim to add and improve the Rwandan environmental, climate and weather-related contents on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.

On the social side, the project will be a good platform to exchange ideas, share the environmental conserving knowledge. We plan to invite a university lecturer in related field and an environmental activist so that they will share crucial environmental information and insights to participants. On the campaign side, the project will engage local community in increasing the local content on Wikimedia websites. On movement side, the project will recruit new volunteers and improve the skills of existing volunteers about Wikimedia websites.

Context

We aim to enhance the visibility for the different Rwandan environmental, climate and weather-related contents on Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikicommons with emphasize on Kinyarwanda Wikis. As a Wikimedians of Ruhengeri User Group, we will be working with Ruhengeri region community to achieve this goal. Specifically, we hope to be with environmental, climate and weather experts from surrounding institutions. To achieve this goal, we will build capacity of the target group by organizing two in-person trainings to help them be familiar with campaign and how they can contribute. In order words, we will have two main activities for this project - trainings and edit-a-thons. The campaign assisting materials will be developed in help of organizers. At the end of this campaign, our top 3 contributors will be awarded with prizes.

The project will be organized by 3 people which are MrTallBoy, Fabnk and Nirwanda12, they are all the experienced wikimedians and founders of Wikimedians of Ruhengeri User Group which is proposing this project. The funds will be transferred to user group bank account.

Fallout

• We expect to play our part in addressing the challenges caused by a shortage of local content related to environmental, climate and weather on Wikimedia websites.
• We will also increase the participation of our community in wikimedia movement by recruiting new editors and improve skills of existing editors.
• We will educate the local community about environment, climate and weather issue the Africa continent is facing.
