Africa Growth Pilot/Online self-paced course/Module 2/Building wiki technology

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

You can build Wikimedia technology yourself. Like I mentioned, there's plenty of technology. Much of it not visible when you're just looking at the wiki. The wiki may just look like a page that you can edit on the spot and that's it.

But there's actually tons of technology around the wiki. Someone was already asking about, for example, a tool to measure contributions, to count, to create all kinds of statistics. We have tons of tools for statistics. We have tools for maps, we have tools for querying and searching, that we already mentioned.

And you could participate, if you are a developer, if you're a programmer in any programing language, you can help build the Wikimedia technology. This is a nice page that has some detailed information on how you can get involved, including if you are only a beginner developer. There are some ways for beginner developers to get involved as well. There are tutorials. I encourage you to click that.

And if you are a more advanced developer, you could literally create some of those tools yourself. Program some bots or gadgets that change the interface of Wikipedia. Again, these are more specialized skills, so I'm not spending a lot of time demonstrating them because it doesn't apply to most of you.
