From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Mini edit-a-thon

Mini edit-a-thon is a one or two-day-long edit-a-thon. During these two days or 48 hours, editors participate in the event and get involved in editing the Wikimedia projects. Each time the theme of the Mini edit-a-thon would be changed.

Background

[edit]

Edit-a-thons are conducted from 2002 with Editing Weekend. Since then, a lot of edit-a-thons or hack-a-thons or events have been organised all over the world for Wikimedia projects. Long-term edit-a-thon was not a good idea because of the fatigue environment around us. When the Mini Edit-a-thon series was started, A2K tried to engage Indic Wikimedians during the ongoing pandemic. The idea was focused on creating or developing content on local Wikimedia projects and tried to engage communities at the same time.

Why Mini Edit-a-thons?

[edit]

A few important aspects are behind the idea of Mini Edit-a-thon which became a series after getting positive responses and active participation from the local communities. The world is facing issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic for the last two years. The Wikimedia movement is also affected by it just like other areas. After six months of lockdown in India, A2K took this initiative to engage the community at the same time. After the first Mini edit-a-thon’s success, which led to boosting the community, we planned a series of such events with suitable themes on different occasions. The motive of the Mini edit-a-thon is to connect with and celebrate the occasion. During this series, we engage and celebrate special occasions with Indic communities. These occasions may have Indian as well as global context. Every edit-a-thon has a purpose to create thematic content on Wikimedia projects. The focus on specific themes results in bridging the gaps with qualitative content. During these events, we interact closely with the community members to understand the needs of the community and the local Wikimedia projects as well.
