CIS-A2K/Events/Wikimedia Commons session for Birdsong members
CIS-A2K has developed partnership with Birdsong organisation based in Sangli to document the biodiversity in Sangli district. The first phase of this project was started with a Wikimedia Commons workshop in January 2022. There was a gap in the activities due to pandemic and difficulties with the members in post-Covid period. The documentation of bird calls and songs is an unique aspect in ornithology. Few members of the birdsong possess the repository of the call recordings. The pioneering work has been done by expert Sharad Apte in this field at India level. He has taken initiative to develop the repository of these recordings on Wikimedia Commons. The first workshop was organised on 20 October 2023 to discuss the structure of documentation on Commons. Total 5 members participated in the session. For specific inputs, we arranged a call with active Wikimedian Shyamal who has valuable contributions in this area. The files are being sorted and renamed systematically according to the Wiki format by Sharad Apte. He has started uploading the files regularly. Many of the species' calls & songs are being uploaded on Commons for the first time.
