In the spirit of UNESCO's International Year of Indigenous Languages, we would like to present the work that is done in Norway and Finland to support the dissemination of Sami knowledge on the Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia Norge has been working on this topic for two years now and the start of the project was to a large extent framed after input during a Celtic Knot Conference workshop in 2017 (see this learning pattern that was written after the workshop). Wikimedia Finland’s started its work about 8 months ago on this topic.
The Sami population lives in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia and there are several Sami languages. There is a Wikipedia in the Northern Sami Language and several Sami language projects on Incubator. In our presentation, we will also have examples from work on Wikimedia Commons, WikiSource and Wikidata.
During our presentation, we will share some of the main ideas and partnerships we are working on, challenges we have faced and future plans. We would like to leave 10 minutes of the presentation time for questions from the attendees.
