Abstract (up to 300 words to describe your proposal)

The United Nations has designated 2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Languages to “raise awareness of Indigenous Languages to appreciate the important contribution they make to our world's rich cultural diversity”.

The IYIL is led by UNESCO where I am Wikimedian in Residence and has a broad range of partner organisations who are experts in different aspects of languages

We are working with the partners to understand their goals and the value of sharing their knowledge on Wikidata and other Wikimedia projects.

Our first project is to work with the experts to understand the databases available which map languages and to import them into Wikidata and to document issues and solutions we faced while importing them and potential new projects which can be done based on the work we have achieved.

What will attendees take away from this session?
  • The state of mapping languages on Wikidata, strategies that worked, things that didn’t.
  • Potential new projects which can be done based on the work we have achieved mapping languages.
  • Strategies for working across many partners at once on a project
