Discussion[edit]

@Ciell: I saw you noticed a previous request (CentralNotice/Request/Change The Story) this is the replacement now the project has changed. Is it practical to have a banner that consists entirely of an image as suggested? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 13:19, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Richard, I personally cannot create a banner from a single image, no. Maybe @DerHexer knows? Ciell (talk) 18:50, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good to know, I see if DerHexer can confirm either way if it's possible and then we may need to change the design to be regular text and an image. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 14:55, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Victuallers: Pinging you so that you know the request is live and can see what is being asked. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 15:50, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Richard Nevell (WMUK): Thanks Richard, I have noted this at the WIR discussion so our members are aware. Feel free to say hi there Victuallers (talk) 08:10, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ciell, Richard Nevell (WMUK), and Victuallers: I've created a banner which should do, please have a look at the preview. When you change the size of the screen, you will see that text size will not be adjusted (which results in small texts or overlayed text). Please tell me if that's okay with you or if we want to provide a scalable HTML version. Then a campaign could be created by Ciell, me or any other CN admin. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:14, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you DerHexer for the contribution, I think thats as good as the original image. Victuallers (talk) 07:32, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks DerHexer.
@Victuallers, @Richard Nevell (WMUK): has the community been notified about the banner, are they okay with it? Ciell (talk) 07:54, 4 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you DerHexer.
@Ciell Women In Red have been notified, should I also post a message on the Village Pump (miscellaneous) on en.wp? Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 12:07, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please do. In the mean time, WiR has a good track record so I have set up the campaign to go live tomorrow morning. The logged in campaign will show in 3 cycles (one per week), the anonymous visitors will see two impressions as a whole. Ciell (talk) 20:16, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just noting that I adjusted the close button on this banner to be visible against the black background. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 09:06, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Peter! Ciell (talk) 10:34, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I chanced upon this banner and checked the preview on mobile. Please note that it's greatly impaired as more than half of the image is cutoff, the remaining part does not make sense. See image here. There's a wide difference with what once sees on desktop, unless if you're not intending to target mobile users. – Ammarpad (talk) 09:55, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Ammarpad, this is indeed the consequence of what @DerHexer mentioned above: "When you change the size of the screen, you will see that text size will not be adjusted (which results in small texts or overlayed text). Please tell me if that's okay with you or if we want to provide a scalable HTML version." However, I do agree this is not a pretty site. :(
(Courtesy ping for @Richard Nevell (WMUK) and @Victuallers, please be aware of this problem with the non-scaling banner.) Ciell (talk) 10:46, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reporting @User:Ammarpad, I've just filed phabricator:T312206 on the unexpected banner behavior. Since 2/3 of the traffic in the UK seems to come from mobile (acc to stats.wikimedia.org), I have now turned the banner off, awaiting responses from others. Ciell (talk) 11:15, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell I can't reproduce the banner showing on mobile (tried enabling it in a test campaign on aa.wikipedia), could you? I think there's maybe just some miscommunication here. @Ammarpad mentioned they "checked the preview" which suggests they looked at the link above [1] with banner=change_the_story_july_2022 in the URL. Such preview links always cause the banner to show, regardless of any settings for desktop/mobile, logged-in/anon etc. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 11:45, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Peter, for the quick follow up!
Enabled the campaign for logged in and aa.wikipedia now. Are you in the UK or should I turn the geotargetting off as well? Ciell (talk) 11:57, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I am in the UK. Confirmed that it shows up on aa.wikipedia.org but not aa.m.wikipedia.org. I'm currently checking logs to see if we have any evidence there of it showing up on mobile unexpectedly. Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 12:06, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I checked the preview link posted by DerHexer above (I mentioned that already). I didn't come across the banner normally. – Ammarpad (talk) 12:12, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This banner was set to only target desktop computers, not the app or mobile sites. Your screenshot shows you were on the mobile site, but Peter is correct that our 'previews' (those shared by CN admins) force the banner to show up regardless the other campaign and banner settings. This is merely meant as a check for the visual representation of the banner. Ciell (talk) 12:19, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay @Ciell I checked the logs (took longer than expected as the Turnilo banner dashboard doesn't have data for the current day, so I had to dive into webrequests) and didn't see any instances of the banner being loaded on mobile user agents. So I think it's safe to close the bug and put the banner back up (remaining desktop only). Peter Coombe (Wikimedia Foundation) (talk) 12:28, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great Peter, thanks. The banners are back up now. Ciell (talk) 14:06, 6 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
