Chapters meeting 2011/Working Groups

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

There is a timeslot reserved for group discussion.

These working groups will focus on specific questions or topics, which can lead to an actual answer or solution within the time frame. The working groups can be used to either cover important topics not covered in the set schedule, or to go more in-depth into the topics covered.

Please try to fill in for each working group:

  • The topic
  • The goal
  • Required participants (if any)
  • Related scheduled topics (if any)

Suggested topics

[edit]

The following topics have been suggested so far – please add any relevant information to these (e.g. the info above, or if you already know that you would like to participate in a suggested working group), or feel free to suggest new ones.

In the end, due to the venue's constraints and to ensure useful outcomes, there can be about 5-6 different topics at the meeting. Also, as one person cannot be in two places at the same time, participants will have to choose one working group that they would like to join (following the group discussions, the results will be presented plenary in a short presentation, and there will be a discussion about the outcomes involving everyone).

GLAM

[edit]
  • GLAM: "GLAM ambassadors & Chapters" i.e. What is the best way for each country to leverage the professional/official capacity of their organisation to undertake GLAM projects AND ALSO for volunteers to be involved in working with their local GLAMs?

Toolserver Governance

[edit]

We should use the opportunity and discuss the current state of our working group. Because we are not where we planned to be for the Berlin meeting, we should use the time to also discuss some of the basic issues we did not fix until now.

Erik Moeller from the WMF asked to participate in this meeting, to give the WMF perspective, as well as to understand the Chapters position in regards to the Toolserver. I think that this is a good idea and invited him.

Required participants: Members of the Toolserver Governance Group or other representatives of the chapters that joined the group.

  • WM DE: Pavel Richter, Daniel Kinzler
  • WM FR: Christophe Henner, Julien Fayolle
  • WM IT: User:Lp
  • WM NO: Lars Åge Kamfjord
  • WM PL: Marek Stelmasik - User:masti
  • WM RU: Vladimir Medeyko, Victor Vasiliev
  • WM CH: Frederic Schutz
  • WM UK: Andrew Turvey

In addition, Erik Moeller for the WMF and River Tarnell for the TS administration will attend.

Movement Roles Working Group 1 - ROLES MATRIX

The roles matrix was published by the movement roles group a few weeks ago. The purpose of the Matrix is to clarify the general roles and responsibilities of organizations and individuals with activity categories, and to define roles, responsibilities and relationships between groups.

GOAL

  • Come down from the meta level to very practical issues of roles being filled or not and gather data from experience

DELIVERABLES

  • Design a survey to gather data about roles and responsibilities from the stakeholders defined by the movement roles project.
  • Draft a follow-up process to interpret the survey results.

Summary

[edit]

Nothing here is specific to chapters (or even to the WM movement)

  • Common challenges
    • Stigmatizing of DW, patronizing
    • Broadband access limited/expensive
    • lack of volunteer and-or open-source culture
    • lack of online references (sometimes even lack of written references)
    • membership fee as a barrier
    • languages with special scripts (technological problem, generally solved but still an issue sometimes)
    • (some places) State bureaucracy, corruption, and danger of co-optation
  • Things that work
    • Being bold
    • To engage volunteers/contributors: LESS ABSTRACT AND GLOBAL, MORE PERSONAL AND LOCAL.
    • horizontal cooperation -- regional and int'l cooperation
    • LESS IS MORE: do few things well
    • OFFLINE content
    • bang for the buck: money buys more impact in the DW
    • partnerships with aligned organizations, piggybacking our content on their infrastructure, manpower, and technology.
    • recording/transcribing oral traditions and making them available online
  • Different viewpoints
    • Helping with technology (WMEE) and project management, experience etc -- rather than money
    • regional events in shared languages that aren't English
    • Important not to focus solely on commonalities, but also on specifics for each region/group

Education topics

[edit]

For more in-depth engagement on the education subject roughly in line with Chapters_meeting_2011/Brainstorming#Engaging_with_Education (including the subsequent comments by others), covering some areas which aren't part of the official education component on the Sunday afternoon (perhaps we can have some outputs which that session can use also?)
