  • Problem: When I am walking in the street and wonder about the name of the people honored by the street's name, I need to stop and type on my phone to get the answer. Then, I get to a library and want to check if an old book I like is available on Wikisource, I need to type the whole name on my phone. In the same book, there is a word I don't understand, so I type it in Wiktionary to get a definition. Tired of typing on my phone, I wonder what's more interesting to do in my city and I type the name on Wikivoyage search bar. I typed a lot. And I don't even had a look at the gorgeous gallery of pictures in Wikimedia Commons associated with my city!
  • Who would benefit: Every person with a smartphone looking for information in Wikipedia, a book in Wikisource, a definition in Wiktionary, a tip in Wikivoyage and so on.
  • Proposed solution: Instead of typing, the camera of my phone should identify a word or a sentence in the frame and provide me suggestions of contents related to it in the wikiverse.
  • More comments: I imagine it's a very specific technology here. But Google Translate can identify and suggest a translation, so why we couldn't have a similar way to enter into the wikiverse?

Such OCR technology sounds more like in scope for a mobile application, I guess? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 14:49, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, it may be better classified under Mobile apps, or under both label? Noé (talk) 15:02, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Noé:. This is a really cool idea, and I'd personally really love to see this happen in some capacity. Unfortunately, creating this system is very complicated, and requires developing and maintaining technology that is quite a way beyond the scope of the Wishlist team. I suggest adding this idea to Phabricator; it might be something that can be slowly worked on as a service by a third party. MSchottlender-WMF (talk) 17:55, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, MSchottlender-WMF, and thank you for your message. I am not so surprise it is out of the scope, but sometimes, I feel it's healthy to suggest some dreams and to see how they came to life in a far future. So, I just create a Phabricator ticket, T209787 Noé (talk) 16:32, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
