Pattypan fixing

NoN Merged with Mass uploader

  • Problem: Pattypan is a very useful tool to upload images to Wikimedia Commons. It stopped working for months, returning error message login failed
  • Who would benefit: It is beneficial to anybody wishing to upload a lot of files to Wikimedia Commons. Many users depend on this tool.
  • Proposed solution: Login failed error need be fixed, a discussion to that effect is happening at github for long, but no solution arrived. Wikimedia may have to fund the process.
  • More comments: Please make a fix at the earliest, there seems no working bulk uploaders at Wikimedia Commons.

From commons:Commons:Pattypan: "Pattypan has been used to upload 1,186,912 images to Wikimedia Commons which are viewed over 80 million times a month across Wikimedia projects." This tool has proven to be powerful and successful. If it is a matter of just updating software to turn it back on, then doing so would bring back the success this tool already is demonstrated to have.   • Underlining the importance, there are Wikimedians In Residence, employed in museums, libraries and other partner organisations, for whom bulk-uploading images to Commons is part of their job; one which they can not do while the most appropriate tool is not working. Having this tool down for one month is bad; having it down for several months, and no suitable replacement, is actually undermining Wikimedia's relationships with partners.   • @Vinayaraj: You mention Please revive or patch or repair the issue with Pattypan in your Mass uploader wish as well. Does "Pattypan fixing" need to be a separate wish, then? The "Mass uploader" wish seems to be more encompassing, and is getting more input from the community, so preferably we'd redirect this page there. Is that alright with you?   • Since Pattynan no longer works (early October 2021), with a group of WP-fr users we have still continued to generate thousands of additional geographical maps with a GIS software (Geographic information system) feeded by many Open Data. These maps make it possible to illustrate several hundred Wikipedia articles for French towns. Pattypan is our best tool to easily upload all these maps into Commons. We have been stuck for more than 3 months, our project is stopped. We hope that a solution will be found soon. --Poudou99 (talk) 06:31, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
