Description

Smart Servier is an image repository of 3000 medical images/illustrations. All images are shared under CC-BY 3.0 license. I have wanted to use these images to illustrate medicine related articles on Wikipedia in all languages.

In receiving help for doing this project, I will be able to acquire the skill sets required for batch uploading similar images from medical repositories. I maintain a list of open access medical repositories here, and the skills I learn from doing the SMART SERVIER project will eventually be helpful for other content partnership programs, particularly those of which I have named in the repository.

Before we started the upload, I contacted Smart Servier, who answered that they will only be happy to let us use the images in whatever way we think best, as long as we provide adequate attribution.

Justification

The images uploaded as a part of this project can be used to illustrate medicine related articles on Wikipedia. Most images from the pilot upload (bones) are now being used on various Wikimedia projects, and the monthly views are estimated to be around 400,000 (July 2022). These images can also be modified to add labels for structures of interest, and doing so would add more value to its quality. Therefore, the project will contribute to filling the gap we have in terms of high resolution images in medicine. This is the first of its kind project where simplified medical images are available for upload on Wikimedia Commons.

Result

• All images and illustrations are added to this Commons Category, more than 3,000 files divided into subcategories.
